In a bold step to challenge the dominance of global social media giants, Türkiye has officially introduced its own open-source digital platform, NeXT Sosyal. Spearheaded by Baykar Chairman Selçuk Bayraktar and developed by a team of young innovators from TEKNOFEST, NeXT Sosyal aims to reshape the digital landscape by offering a transparent, secure, and independent social media experience for users in Türkiye and beyond.
The announcement was made public during a televised interview on CNN Türk, where Selçuk Bayraktar detailed the platform’s mission, vision, and growing momentum. Within just ten days of its initial announcement, NeXT Sosyal has already attracted more than 630,000 users — a remarkable feat that signals strong interest in an alternative to conventional social media networks.

An Open-Source Vision Built on Turkish Innovation
Bayraktar emphasized that NeXT Sosyal had been a long-standing vision: “We’ve been contemplating this project for years. The technical infrastructure was built by a technology company established by TEKNOFEST entrepreneurs. They pursued an open-source development approach, ensuring transparency and community collaboration.”
Unlike traditional social media platforms, NeXT Sosyal is rooted in principles of transparency and decentralized control. It offers a dual-source foundation, enabling developers worldwide — including universities, research institutions, and tech enthusiasts — to customize and extend the platform. “Anyone who wants to build their own open-source social network can use this platform. That’s exactly why we made it open,” Bayraktar added.
A Platform Born from Resistance to Digital Control
Beyond its technical features, NeXT Sosyal represents a philosophical challenge to what Bayraktar describes as “digital tyranny.” He referenced incidents where world leaders were removed from social media platforms and recalled having his own account suspended for publishing a condolence message. “Social media today is being used to divide societies. It is no longer a tool for connection but for manipulation,” he warned.
He believes that the world is heading into a dangerous digital age where truth is often suppressed under algorithms and censorship. “We want to break down this digital hegemony. When I criticized global platforms for ignoring humanitarian crises, such as those in Gaza, I noticed how my posts disappeared from visibility,” he said.
According to Bayraktar, the name “NeXT” was chosen deliberately in English to appeal to a global audience, though he indicated openness to renaming the Turkish version of the platform to better reflect national identity.
Political Backing Strengthens the Platform’s Visibility
In a rare show of digital unity, nearly all members of Türkiye’s presidential cabinet have joined NeXT Sosyal and voiced their support. Their early participation provides both symbolic and practical momentum for the platform.
Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz stated, “Our national and domestic platform NeXT Sosyal is now online. I invite all technology enthusiasts to join this digital journey.” He congratulated those involved in building the platform, adding that he had already joined NeXT.
Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç called the project “a new era in social media,” while Youth and Sports Minister Osman Aşkın Bak remarked, “X can no longer serve as our digital public square. Let’s meet on NeXT — because we made it.”
Messages of encouragement also came from the Ministers of Culture and Tourism, Environment, Family and Social Services, and even the Ministry of National Defense, which launched its official NeXT Sosyal account to share public announcements and operations.
Digital Sovereignty in an Era of Global Dependence
The rise of NeXT Sosyal is part of Türkiye’s broader effort to achieve digital independence. From national payment systems to defense technology, the country has made significant investments in reducing reliance on foreign digital infrastructure. Social media — often seen as the last untouched frontier of global tech control — is now under local transformation.
Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek, who also joined the platform, remarked: “I hope this platform will be beneficial to our country. Congratulations to all who made it possible.” His message reflects the growing recognition that Türkiye’s digital sovereignty is tied not just to hardware and finance, but also to control over narrative and communication.

Critics and Internal Challenges
Despite its growing user base and official support, NeXT Sosyal has faced criticism and even hostility — not just externally, but from within Türkiye. “We expected pushback from outside, but internal opposition surprised us,” Bayraktar admitted. He compared the skepticism around NeXT to the early resistance faced by Baykar’s UAV development: “The same political narratives are being recycled.”
He reiterated that true change can only happen when systems are built, not just criticized. “You can’t rebuild the world by complaining. You must create something better. And our children will do it — they will build a just, compassionate, and enlightened civilization.”
A Technological Step Forward with Ethical Roots
Bayraktar’s vision goes beyond platform mechanics. He sees NeXT Sosyal as a reflection of a moral and civilizational stance. “The most talented engineers in the world are busy building Instagram filters while patients die due to ventilator shortages. That tells you everything about our priorities.”
NeXT Sosyal, therefore, isn’t just a platform — it’s a movement. A call to action against digital colonialism, algorithmic manipulation, and information censorship. It offers a chance for societies to reclaim their voices, their data, and their dignity in an increasingly artificial digital realm.
The Road Ahead: Can NeXT Sustain Its Momentum?
With early government support, a passionate development team, and a receptive user base, NeXT Sosyal has all the ingredients of a successful tech initiative. But sustaining this growth will require more than patriotic enthusiasm. The platform must prove its technical stability, resist cyber threats, ensure user privacy, and deliver the intuitive, fast-paced features that users expect.
Moreover, to fulfill its global aspirations, NeXT must also build international trust and engagement — particularly from communities that have grown skeptical of centralized, ad-driven platforms. The real challenge will be not just in building an app, but in cultivating a community that shares the vision of digital fairness and freedom.
Türkiye’s New Digital Arena Is Just Beginning
As ministers, developers, and users continue to populate NeXT Sosyal with ideas, discussions, and content, it becomes clear that Türkiye is carving out its space in the global digital conversation. The creation of a national platform that merges technical excellence with philosophical depth marks a defining moment in the country’s digital evolution.
Whether NeXT Sosyal becomes a regional trailblazer or a global alternative remains to be seen. But one thing is certain — Türkiye is no longer content to be a passive consumer in the digital world. It is stepping forward as a creator.
