As summer continues to blaze across Türkiye, the country’s weather patterns are entering a period of sharp contrasts. According to the latest forecasts by the Meteorological Service, the northern, interior, and Mediterranean regions are expected to face scattered thunderstorms, while other areas remain dry and intensely hot. From sudden downpours in Istanbul to unrelenting heat in the eastern provinces, Türkiye is bracing for a diverse and dynamic weather week.

Meteoroloji gün verdi: İstanbul'a sağanak yağış geliyor!

Local Thunderstorms on the Horizon

The forecast reveals that much of the north and central inland regions will experience partly to mostly cloudy skies, with localized showers and thunderstorms developing throughout the day. Particularly, the inland Mediterranean, the Eastern Black Sea coast, and cities like Kütahya, Afyonkarahisar, Eskişehir, Bolu, and Ordu will likely see weather disturbances including lightning and short but intense bursts of rainfall.

These storms are expected to be spotty and fast-moving, but potentially strong enough to impact daily activities. Thunderstorms during the summer season often emerge from intense surface heating and moisture convergence, creating abrupt shifts in weather that can take many by surprise.

Istanbul to Experience Two Days of Rain

While the scorching sun continues to dominate most of the country, İstanbul stands out as one of the major cities set to experience back-to-back days of local downpours. On Thursday and Friday, residents of Türkiye’s most populated city should expect patchy but powerful rainstorms that may rapidly intensify in some neighborhoods.

These summer showers will likely be short-lived but can lead to temporary flooding in low-lying areas, traffic disruptions, and lightning risks. Commuters and city dwellers are urged to stay alert during these periods and to follow updates from local authorities and weather stations.

Prepare for Sudden Weather Changes

The Meteorological General Directorate has emphasized that the risk of sudden weather shifts isn’t limited to İstanbul. Warnings have been issued for northern, interior, and western parts of Türkiye, where abrupt cloud formations may bring heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and occasional lightning.

In areas where dry weather dominates, any storm can still pose risks, especially after prolonged hot spells. The land becomes drier and less able to absorb sudden rain, leading to surface runoff and flash floods. Those living in or traveling through the aforementioned regions are advised to keep rain gear handy and stay updated on changing forecasts.

Heat Continues to Grip Eastern Türkiye

In stark contrast to storm-affected areas, the eastern regions of Türkiye continue to grapple with intense heat. Forecasts predict that temperatures will remain 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above seasonal averages in these provinces, pushing the mercury well into the 40s in some cities.

Southeastern cities such as Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Siirt, and Mardin will experience relentless sunshine and exceptionally high temperatures, increasing the risk of dehydration, sunstroke, and wildfires. Public health officials have reiterated the importance of hydration, sun protection, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

Even in typically cooler locations like Erzurum and Kars, highs are expected to reach 35°C, making it one of the hottest weeks of the year across the East.

Windy Conditions in the Marmara Region

While heat and storms take center stage in other areas, the Marmara region will contend with strong winds from the north. Gusts of 30 to 50 km/h are anticipated, particularly near coastal provinces such as Edirne, Kırklareli, and İstanbul.

These winds may offer some relief from the warmth but could also stir up dust and cause travel inconveniences, especially for ferry operations and drivers of high-sided vehicles. Agricultural activities in open fields might also be affected due to drying winds and potential topsoil erosion.

Regional Forecast Highlights

  • Marmara will enjoy partly cloudy skies with strong northerly winds. Temperatures in Edirne and Balıkesir will reach up to 36°C and 35°C respectively, while İstanbul is expected to stay cooler with highs of 31°C.

  • Aegean regions, particularly inland areas like Afyonkarahisar and Denizli, will face scattered thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours. Coastal areas such as İzmir and Manisa will remain hot and mostly sunny.

  • Mediterranean zones, including Adana and Antalya, will experience partly to mostly cloudy skies, with local showers forecasted for the western interior zones and the Taurus Mountain region.

  • Central Anatolia will see cloud development in the afternoon, especially around Eskişehir and Ankara, leading to brief thunderstorms.

  • Black Sea provinces will experience variable cloudiness, with Ordu and Eastern Black Sea coastlines likely to witness showers and possible thunder.

  • Eastern Anatolia will continue its hot and dry spell, with Malatya climbing to 40°C and Van maintaining mid-30s under clear skies.

  • Southeastern Anatolia is set to endure the highest temperatures, with Diyarbakır forecasted to hit 42°C and Gaziantep at 40°C.

A Call for Awareness and Adaptation

Türkiye’s diverse climate often brings a mix of weather conditions in a single week, and the coming days are no exception. As hot air masses from the southeast collide with moist systems moving in from the north and west, the risk of localized storms and weather volatility increases significantly.

Authorities are calling for heightened awareness, particularly for those planning travel, outdoor sports, agricultural work, or attending large gatherings. Emergency services and municipalities are on alert, and weather bulletins will be issued regularly to provide the latest updates.

From umbrellas in İstanbul to sunglasses in Diyarbakır, residents across Türkiye should prepare for a weather rollercoaster. Whether it’s sheltering from sudden rainfall or shielding from extreme sun, the key to navigating this unpredictable period lies in vigilance, flexibility, and staying informed.
