Reports have emerged that verification codes allegedly from crypto exchange BTC Türk were sent via SMS to individuals who do not have accounts on the platform. The unexpected messages raised concerns over potential misuse of personal data, prompting a wave of complaints across online forums and social media.

Confusion Over Unsolicited SMS Messages

According to NTV, some recipients received a message stating: “Identity Verification Code: Please do not share this code with BTC Türk personnel.” While such messages are standard security measures for existing customers, the fact that they were received by people without any BTC Türk account led to fears that unauthorized accounts might have been opened in their names.

Many concerned individuals took to complaint platforms to share their experiences and seek clarification, questioning whether their personal information had been compromised.

BTC Türk Issues Reassuring Statement

Later in the day, BTC Türk released an official statement titled “Information Regarding Verification SMS from Kripto” to address the concerns. The company emphasized that opening an account on the platform requires multiple verification steps beyond SMS and email confirmation. These include identity verification and a liveness test, all of which must be completed successfully before an account can be created.

The statement clarified that receiving a verification code without initiating a sign-up request does not mean an account has been opened. Instead, such messages are likely the result of unsuccessful and incomplete registration attempts. BTC Türk assured users that technical measures are in place to prevent abuse and that these failed attempts pose no risk to their personal information.

Guidance for Recipients

BTC Türk advised that individuals who receive such unsolicited verification messages can safely disregard them if they have not initiated the process themselves. The company reiterated that no account can be activated without completing all security steps and encouraged anyone with concerns to reach out via the “Live Support” or “Contact Us” sections of the app, which operate 24/7.

The incident highlights the importance of public awareness in distinguishing between legitimate security communications and potential phishing attempts. While in this case the platform confirmed the messages were not evidence of a breach, crypto users are reminded to remain vigilant and never share verification codes with anyone.
