An inspiring medical success story has emerged from Türkiye, where an 8-year-old boy named Erdem, born with hypospadias, has overcome years of urinary incontinence and difficulty urinating thanks to a specialized intervention at Medipol Acıbadem Regional Hospital.
For years, Erdem’s family believed his nighttime bedwetting and daytime bathroom struggles were just part of his growth process. However, as the symptoms worsened, they sought medical help. Comprehensive evaluations revealed that Erdem was facing a significant bladder dysfunction that had gone undiagnosed for years.

Hidden Obstruction Identified and Treated
Pediatric Urology Specialist Prof. Dr. Selçuk Sılay explained that during the operation, a “hidden membrane” blocking the bladder outlet was discovered. This condition, known as Posterior Urethral Valve (PUV), was the root cause of Erdem’s ongoing problems. Using minimally invasive techniques, doctors removed the obstruction, corrected curvature in the penis, and performed circumcision—all in a single procedure. Remarkably, Erdem recovered without even requiring pain medication.
Erdem’s mother, Dilekşen Filiz Tek, shared her relief, noting that after a previous surgery for hypospadias at age one, complications later developed. “We dealt with constant urination difficulties and nighttime accidents. The team at Medipol acted quickly and efficiently. The results were beyond our expectations,” she said.
A Condition Resembling Elderly Prostate Problems
Prof. Dr. Sılay highlighted the unusual nature of Erdem’s case. Despite his young age, his bladder had suffered damage similar to that seen in elderly men with advanced prostate issues. “He could not fully empty his bladder, had weak urine flow, and experienced nightly leakage. After laser treatment, we combined the intervention with pelvic floor muscle exercises, which greatly improved his bladder function,” he explained.
Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation as a Game-Changer
The rehabilitation program was a crucial part of Erdem’s recovery. Guided by a specialized physiotherapy team, Erdem learned how to control his bladder, strengthen the correct muscles, and develop healthier urination habits. This drug-free, non-surgical approach involved 10 targeted sessions, after which his urine flow increased four to five times and nighttime accidents completely stopped.
Prof. Dr. Sılay emphasized that pelvic floor rehabilitation is not only beneficial for children with structural problems like Erdem but also for those with functional urinary issues. Children who frequently urinate, experience incontinence, spend excessive time in the bathroom, or suffer from constipation can all benefit from this method.

A Model for Pediatric Urology in Türkiye
The success of Erdem’s treatment represents an important example of how early diagnosis and multidisciplinary collaboration can transform a child’s quality of life. By combining modern surgical methods with physiotherapy-based rehabilitation, Medipol Acıbadem Regional Hospital has demonstrated a patient-centered approach that minimizes medication use, avoids unnecessary procedures, and focuses on restoring normal daily function.
Medical experts stress that parents should never dismiss ongoing urinary symptoms in children as mere developmental quirks. Addressing such problems early not only prevents long-term bladder damage but also spares children from the emotional and social challenges of living with incontinence.
This case reinforces the importance of integrating physiotherapy into urological treatment plans and highlights Türkiye’s growing expertise in advanced pediatric care. With increased awareness and access to such innovative methods, more children can look forward to healthy, confident, and independent lives.
