For the first time in its illustrious history, Russia’s legendary Bolshoi Theatre will bring its world-class ballet troupe to Istanbul, delivering a truly unforgettable cultural experience. As part of the Türkiye Kültür Yolu Festivali, this landmark performance series will be hosted at the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) from September 26 to 30, showcasing two iconic ballets: Romeo and Juliet and Swan Lake.

This monumental cultural event is being realized in collaboration with the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA) and organized by Art Seasons, marking a new chapter in Türkiye’s journey as a global hub for performing arts.

Bolshoi Arrives in Istanbul

Known for its grandeur, perfectionism, and deeply rooted tradition in classical ballet, Bolshoi Theatre has long been a symbol of Russia’s artistic identity. Its arrival in Türkiye is not just another international tour — it’s a cultural milestone. The Istanbul performance represents the Bolshoi’s first-ever appearance in Türkiye, and it comes with the full scale of its brilliance.

The tour will open with Prokofiev’s dramatic “Romeo and Juliet” on September 26 and 27, followed by Tchaikovsky’s enchanting “Swan Lake” on September 29 and 30. All performances will be accompanied by the prestigious Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra, conducted by the internationally acclaimed Anton Grishanin.

Star Power: Svetlana Zakharova as Juliet

The event will be elevated further by the presence of Svetlana Zakharova, the Bolshoi’s principal ballerina and one of the most celebrated dancers of our time. Zakharova will take the stage in the role of Juliet on September 26, bringing with her a performance history that spans the greatest ballet stages around the globe.

The cast also features Bolshoi’s other distinguished principal dancers and soloists, including Artemy Belyakov, Egor Gerashchenko, Elizaveta Kokoreva, Alyona Kovalyova, Denis Savin, and Yulia Stepanova. Their participation ensures that the Istanbul audience will witness ballet at its finest — a harmonious blend of storytelling, movement, and orchestral majesty.

Behind the Curtain: 350-Person Production Team

The Bolshoi is not merely sending a small delegation. A massive production team of over 350 people, including dancers, musicians, and technical staff, will arrive in Istanbul. Alongside them, original costumes and set designs from the Bolshoi’s historic stage will be transported to recreate the same visual atmosphere that defines the theatre’s reputation.

From the hand-painted backdrops to the meticulously crafted tutus, audiences in Türkiye will enjoy an authentic Bolshoi experience, something rarely witnessed outside Russia.

Türkiye’s Cultural Rise on the Global Stage

This event is more than an artistic performance; it reflects Türkiye’s rising status in the global cultural landscape. As Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy emphasized, the Kültür Yolu Festival is a platform for connecting cities with their history, memory, and future through art.

Hosting the Bolshoi Ballet, one of the world’s most revered performing arts institutions, demonstrates Türkiye’s commitment to celebrating both local and international cultural heritage. It also highlights Istanbul’s growing importance as a cultural capital, capable of attracting and hosting global legends in art, dance, and music.

The Cultural Significance of Romeo and Juliet & Swan Lake

Both Romeo and Juliet and Swan Lake are not just ballets — they are narratives embedded in the collective consciousness of the world. Romeo and Juliet, based on Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy, is known for its emotional intensity, dramatic score, and evocative choreography. Swan Lake, with its tale of love, magic, and betrayal, remains one of the most visually captivating performances in classical ballet.

Bringing these works to Türkiye, in their full-scale Bolshoi productions, provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for audiences to experience two of the greatest ballets ever written — interpreted by those who define the global standard of excellence.

A City Ready for the Stage

Istanbul, a city that bridges East and West, past and future, is an ideal backdrop for such a cultural convergence. The Atatürk Cultural Center, renovated with modern acoustics and design, will serve as the perfect stage to house this spectacle. The venue’s world-class infrastructure ensures that every pirouette, pas de deux, and orchestral note will be felt in its fullest grandeur.

Ticketing, Accessibility, and Global Attention

While ticket details are expected to be announced soon, anticipation is already soaring across the cultural community in Türkiye. Social media platforms and international art publications have begun to spotlight the event, with many calling it one of the most significant ballet performances Türkiye has ever hosted.

Tickets are expected to sell out quickly, especially with the presence of Zakharova and other lead dancers. Cultural tourism stakeholders anticipate an influx of international visitors, further cementing Türkiye’s role in global art diplomacy.

Don’t Miss This Historic Cultural Encounter

Whether you are a seasoned ballet enthusiast or someone new to the world of classical performance, Bolshoi’s Istanbul tour is not to be missed. It promises powerful storytelling, exquisite movement, and orchestral magnificence — all under the majestic roof of AKM.

From September 26 to 30, the spirit of Russian ballet and the soul of Turkish hospitality will meet, creating a cultural moment that will echo far beyond the stage.
