As the new academic year begins, Türkiye’s Ministry of Education has emphasized the importance of a smooth transition for children starting preschool and first grade. According to the ministry’s written statement, the first bell will ring on September 1st for special “adaptation” programs designed to help young learners ease into school life.

Officials explained that the goal of these orientation sessions is to minimize stress and ensure children adapt with less anxiety. The ministry highlighted that returning to school after a long summer break can trigger separation anxiety, especially among younger children, and may create adjustment challenges if not properly managed.

Family attitudes shape the adaptation process

Experts stress that the role of parents during this period is critical. Children should never be compared to others, as comparisons may lower self-esteem and create unnecessary pressure. Instead, families are encouraged to foster confidence by presenting school as a positive, safe, and exciting environment.

Parents are advised to use encouraging language when talking about school, highlighting fun activities, games, and the opportunity to make new friends. Negative remarks about teachers, classrooms, or the school setting should be avoided in front of children, as these can increase anxiety.

Creating a positive school image

One of the key recommendations is to establish in children’s minds the idea that school is not just a place of learning but also a place of joy and social interaction. Describing the school day in terms of interesting lessons, playtime, and new friendships helps build anticipation rather than fear.

Introducing children to their teachers early can also play a major role. Meeting the teacher gives children a sense of security, while accompanying them during the first days strengthens their confidence. The ministry also stressed that parents should closely cooperate with teachers and school administration, ensuring consistency between home and school expectations.

Building routines and reducing anxiety

Children adjust better when daily routines are established in advance. Parents are encouraged to gradually introduce structured schedules covering school start and end times, mealtime habits, classroom rules, and extracurricular activities.

To further reduce post-holiday anxiety, children can be directed toward sports and playful physical activities they enjoy. At the same time, setting rules step by step rather than imposing strict restrictions immediately makes the process smoother and less intimidating.

The psychological dimension of school entry

Psychologists note that starting school is a developmental milestone for children, shaping not only their educational journey but also their emotional resilience. Creating a balance between discipline and encouragement helps children internalize school as a safe and rewarding environment.

Parents are urged to model calm behavior themselves. When families demonstrate confidence and optimism, children tend to mirror those emotions. Conversely, anxious or negative parental attitudes can intensify children’s fears.

Editorial reflection

The Ministry of Education’s reminder underlines that starting preschool or first grade is as much an emotional step as an academic one. By presenting school as a place of discovery and friendship, maintaining open communication with teachers, and easing children into structured routines, parents can significantly reduce adaptation challenges.

In this way, the “first bell” becomes not a source of fear but the beginning of an exciting journey filled with growth, exploration, and confidence for Türkiye’s youngest students.
