Surge in Bluefin Tuna Catch

The majority of the catch consisted of bluefin tuna, a highly valued species on global markets. Compared to 2023, the number of tuna caught increased by 256 percent, while export revenues rose by 153 percent.

This growth not only highlights Türkiye’s expanding role in global tuna trade but also reflects the increasing demand for premium seafood products in Asia.

Japan and South Korea Lead Demand

Two Asian powerhouses emerged as the main markets for Turkish tuna: Japan and South Korea.

  • Exports to Japan reached 99 million dollars, marking a 58 percent increase.

  • Shipments to South Korea totaled 29.5 million dollars, reflecting a striking 245 percent rise.

Almost all of the tuna caught by Turkish fishermen ended up in these two countries, where bluefin tuna is a culinary delicacy, especially in sushi and sashimi.

Türkiye’s Broader Leadership in Seafood

According to Sinan Kızıltan, Chairman of the Turkish Seafood and Animal Products Exporters’ Sector Board, Türkiye already holds the top global position in sea bass and sea bream production. With bluefin tuna, the country is also securing an increasingly influential place in the high-value segment of seafood exports.

Kızıltan emphasized that much of the tuna is caught in international waters of the Mediterranean and around Malta, before being exported to Asia. He noted that Turkish fishermen have built a reputation for supplying premium-quality tuna to some of the most demanding markets in the world.

Expanding Aquaculture and Export Potential

Türkiye’s aquaculture and fishing industries are recognized worldwide for their growth and efficiency. With strong infrastructure and experienced fleets, the sector is well-positioned to expand further. Authorities and exporters alike are aiming to increase international sales, ensuring that seafood remains one of the country’s key export pillars.

Strategic Importance of Tuna

Bluefin tuna has a unique role in the seafood trade. Beyond its high market value, it connects Türkiye to strategic export destinations such as Japan and South Korea, strengthening trade ties while diversifying the country’s economic portfolio.

Given the rising global appetite for protein and the premium status of tuna in Asian cuisine, Türkiye’s position as a supplier is set to gain more importance in the coming years.

Türkiye’s 2025 tuna export performance demonstrates how the nation combines its natural maritime resources with international trade opportunities. With growing catches, expanding aquaculture investments and solid demand from Asia, the sector is expected to continue thriving as one of Türkiye’s strongest export champions.
