Ankara’s New Step to Support Electric Vehicle Owners
➤ According to www.otomobilhaber.com’s report, In an effort to boost the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the city, the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality’s Transportation Coordination Center (UKOME) has made a landmark decision. The new regulation prohibits fossil fuel vehicles from parking in electric vehicle charging stations in certain areas across the city. This decision aims to ensure that EV owners can charge their cars without facing the inconvenience of having their charging spots occupied by petrol or diesel vehicles.
This move could be a model for other cities, potentially expanding nationwide.
The Growing Need for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in Ankara
As electric vehicles gain popularity in Turkey, the demand for charging infrastructure has surged. Companies providing charging services, such as Neva İç ve Dış Ticaret A.Ş., have responded by setting up charging stations in various locations throughout Ankara, just like in other cities.
However, these charging stations faced a significant issue: fossil fuel-powered vehicles parking in the designated spots meant for electric cars, preventing EVs from charging. This issue led Neva İç ve Dış Ticaret A.Ş. to file a petition to the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, requesting the designation of these charging stations exclusively for electric vehicles.
Following the company’s complaint, the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality took swift action to resolve the matter, leading to the new ruling by UKOME.
Details of the UKOME Decision and Its Implications
The decision was made after Neva İç ve Dış Ticaret A.Ş. submitted a formal request to UKOME on February 12, 2025. The company’s petition highlighted the commercial loss and disruption caused by fossil fuel vehicles occupying spots meant for electric car charging. The company had signed a lease agreement for 65 charging stations with a total capacity for 130 vehicles, as per a decision made by the Municipality Council on October 24, 2024. However, the persistent issue of unauthorized parking by non-electric vehicles was obstructing the use of these charging stations, leading to financial losses.
As a result, the issue was brought to the UKOME General Assembly, which considered the problem and ultimately approved the following measures:
Designating the Charging Stations for Electric Vehicles Only:
The decision involves several key locations in Ankara, including:Çankaya District, Oran Mahallesi, Turan Güneş Boulevard
Çankaya District, Remzi Oğuz Arık, and Kavaklıdere Mahallesi
Altındağ District, Zübeyde Hanım Mahallesi, Kazım Karabekir Street
And more, totaling 65 charging stations spread across Ankara.
Enforcing a No-Parking Rule for Fossil Fuel Vehicles:
In addition to reserving the stations for electric vehicles, a clear no-parking rule will be enforced in these areas. This will be clearly marked with traffic signs and panels, including the directive, “No Parking Except for Charging Vehicles.”
UKOME’s Approval and the Positive Impact on EV Owners
The UKOME’s decision received unanimous approval, ensuring the swift implementation of these rules. Electric vehicle owners in Ankara can now expect an easier and more reliable experience when it comes to finding available charging spots. The new regulations not only cater to the needs of EV owners but also reflect the city’s broader commitment to sustainability and clean energy solutions.
What This Means for the Future of Electric Vehicles in Turkey
This move by Ankara Metropolitan Municipality is a significant step forward for the electric vehicle ecosystem in Turkey. With electric vehicle adoption increasing rapidly, the demand for accessible and well-managed charging infrastructure is more critical than ever. By taking this proactive approach, Ankara is setting an example for other cities in Turkey to follow, ensuring that electric vehicle owners have the necessary infrastructure to support their transition to cleaner, greener transportation.
As we look ahead, it is clear that the future of transportation in Turkey will heavily involve electric vehicles, and the decision by UKOME could very well be the first of many similar actions across the country. The move reflects not just an effort to support electric vehicles but also a broader environmental commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability.
As an advocate for environmental sustainability, it’s encouraging to see Ankara’s commitment to a greener future. While the decision to make charging stations exclusive to electric vehicles is a small but crucial step, the broader implications for Turkey’s EV landscape cannot be understated.
For electric car owners in Ankara, this move will undoubtedly offer a more seamless and reliable experience. One can only hope that this initiative will spark a nationwide change, making EV ownership more practical and convenient throughout Turkey.
