Two senior figures of ASSAN Group, a company operating under scrutiny for alleged ties to FETÖ and military espionage, have been formally arrested following judicial proceedings in Istanbul. Company owner Emin Öner and general manager Gürcan Okumuş were detained as part of an investigation led by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and have now been remanded in custody.

Court Proceedings and Charges

After completing their interrogations at the prosecutor’s office, both suspects were referred to court with a request for formal arrest. The magistrates’ court charged Öner with “membership in an armed terrorist organization” and “destroying, misusing, fraudulently obtaining or stealing documents related to state security.”

Okumuş, meanwhile, was charged with “destroying, misusing, fraudulently obtaining or stealing documents related to state security.” Both men were ordered to be held in pre-trial detention.

Allegations of Espionage

According to details of the investigation, authorities linked both executives to espionage activities popularly referred to as “military espionage” in Turkish public discourse. The inquiry revealed alleged connections between the ASSAN Group executives and members of the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ), which Turkey has held responsible for orchestrating espionage networks and attempts to infiltrate state institutions.

The charges suggest that the suspects may have accessed or attempted to manipulate sensitive documents tied to national defense and state security. These allegations, if proven, fall under some of the gravest crimes in Turkish law, carrying severe penalties.

The August 27 Operation

Emin Öner and Gürcan Okumuş were first detained on August 27, during a coordinated police operation targeting corporate entities suspected of involvement in espionage activities. The raids culminated in the seizure of documents and digital materials thought to be linked to security breaches.

As part of the same operation, the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) was appointed trustee to 10 companies operating under the ASSAN Group umbrella. This move placed the firms under state control, ensuring that their business activities, assets, and records remain secured during the investigation.

Broader Context of “Military Espionage” Cases

The arrests fall within a wider campaign against networks allegedly involved in espionage activities tied to FETÖ. Turkish authorities have long accused the group of infiltrating the military, bureaucracy, and private sector to gather intelligence and undermine state institutions.

In recent years, several high-profile cases have emerged, leading to arrests, prosecutions, and the appointment of trustees to various companies. These measures form part of the government’s broader effort to dismantle financial and organizational structures linked to FETÖ following the failed coup attempt of 2016.

Implications for ASSAN Group

ASSAN Group, previously known for its commercial activities in multiple sectors, now faces serious legal challenges. With TMSF managing its companies, normal operations may continue under state supervision, but the brand’s reputation has been significantly damaged.

Industry observers note that while the group’s business footprint was not as prominent as Türkiye’s largest conglomerates, its alleged role in espionage activities marks a dramatic shift in its public profile. The case is expected to have ripple effects across the corporate community, reinforcing concerns about the infiltration of private sector companies by organizations accused of subversive activity.

What Comes Next

The judicial process will now move into a deeper investigative phase. Prosecutors are expected to analyze seized documents, financial records, and digital evidence to determine the scope of the alleged espionage activities. Witness testimonies, links to other individuals or organizations, and possible international dimensions of the case will also be examined.

Given the gravity of the charges, both Öner and Okumuş could face lengthy prison sentences if convicted. The courts will also weigh the broader implications of their alleged ties to FETÖ and assess whether further corporate assets or individuals linked to ASSAN Group should be targeted.

Editor’s Note: The arrest of ASSAN Group executives marks another escalation in Türkiye’s fight against espionage networks and alleged FETÖ-linked activities. While the investigation unfolds, the case highlights the government’s determination to secure state institutions and prevent private companies from being exploited for activities against national security.
