Fenerbahçe has entered a decisive period in its managerial search following the departure of Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho. The club, eager to stabilize quickly before the new season, is weighing both local and foreign options, with familiar name İsmail Kartal once again emerging as a strong candidate.

İsmail Kartal meets with management
According to reports, Kartal held a private meeting with Hamdi Akın, Fenerbahçe’s vice president, where he expressed his readiness to take over the squad immediately. In a symbolic moment captured by cameras, Kartal arrived at Akın’s residence by boat and departed the same way, fueling speculation about his return.
Speaking about the possibility of resuming his role, Kartal said:
“I have watched all the matches. I know the condition of the players and what needs to be done. I was already part of the team. Whatever is best for Fenerbahçe, let it happen.”
The details of the meeting will now be shared with club president Ali Koç, who will play a key role in making the final decision.
Schmidt considered the foreign frontrunner
While Kartal is the leading local candidate, Fenerbahçe has also explored international options. Roger Schmidt, the experienced German coach currently working abroad, was listed as the top foreign target. However, initial indications suggest that Schmidt is not eager to accept the offer at this stage.
Kartal’s past with Fenerbahçe
Should he return, it would mark Kartal’s fourth spell in charge of the club. In his most recent tenure before Mourinho, he guided Fenerbahçe to a record 99 points in the Turkish Süper Lig, though the team narrowly missed the championship, finishing second.
Over three different stints, Kartal has managed 125 matches, with a strong record of 86 wins, 22 draws, and only 17 losses. His deep knowledge of the squad and Turkish football makes him a familiar and trusted figure within the club.
Recent experience abroad
Kartal’s latest coaching role was with Persepolis, one of Iran’s most successful clubs. Taking over in January 2025, he remained until June, leading the team in 16 matches with 8 victories, 4 draws, and 4 defeats. His international experience adds weight to his candidacy, showing adaptability beyond the Turkish league.

Editorial reflection
Fenerbahçe’s managerial choice will shape not only the club’s short-term future but also its long-term vision. Kartal’s history with the team, strong domestic record, and close ties to the players position him as the natural fallback option. Yet the allure of a high-profile foreign manager continues to intrigue sections of the fanbase.
As negotiations unfold, the club faces a familiar dilemma — choosing between a proven local figure who knows the fabric of Fenerbahçe or a foreign name who could bring international prestige. Either way, the next decision will be pivotal in defining the club’s ambitions for the upcoming season.
