Honda Türkiye, which had ceased its automobile production operations in 2021 after a 24-year journey, is making a strong comeback to the Turkish manufacturing landscape. This time, the global automotive giant is pivoting towards the two-wheeler segment by establishing a brand-new motorcycle production plant in İzmir, with an investment of 760 million Turkish lira. The facility is scheduled to commence operations by mid-2026 and represents Honda’s commitment to adapting to changing market dynamics and consumer mobility trends in Türkiye.

Türkiye’s Booming Motorcycle Market Sets the Stage

In recent years, the motorcycle market in Türkiye has witnessed a remarkable transformation. Rising demand from the courier and logistics sectors, coupled with increasing difficulties in accessing new automobiles due to cost and availability, has propelled motorcycles into the spotlight. In 2024 alone, over 1.2 million motorcycles were sold in Türkiye, signaling a massive shift in urban mobility preferences.

This exponential growth did not go unnoticed by industry leaders. As new models flood the market, Türkiye is swiftly becoming a central hub for two-wheeler production. Honda’s decision to establish its motorcycle manufacturing base in İzmir is both strategic and timely, aligning with this national momentum.

Production Capacity and Workforce Plans

Honda Türkiye’s upcoming plant in İzmir’s Aliağa district is poised to start with an annual production capacity of 100,000 units. The company envisions scaling this figure progressively, ultimately reaching a production target of 200,000 motorcycles per year.

The facility will span a massive area of 100,000 square meters and is expected to provide employment opportunities for approximately 300 individuals. This aligns with Honda’s broader objective of reinforcing its global production capabilities while contributing to the local economy and employment landscape in Türkiye.

Strategic Motives Behind the Investment

The decision to invest in motorcycle production comes as part of Honda Türkiye’s broader strategy to support sustainable growth in the rapidly expanding two-wheeler segment. The company aims not only to address domestic demand but also to boost its global motorcycle sales by leveraging Türkiye’s strategic geographic location and skilled workforce.

Following the global disruptions caused by the pandemic, individual mobility needs surged, fueling an uptick in demand for cost-effective and flexible transportation alternatives. This market shift played a pivotal role in Honda Türkiye’s record-breaking sales in 2024, during which the company sold 162,000 motorcycles — its highest annual sales figure to date.

Building a New Mobility Culture

Honda Türkiye’s new facility isn’t just about increasing numbers; it also aims to foster a deeper cultural shift. The plant will be instrumental in supporting the development of a motorcycle-centric mobility culture within Türkiye. As urban centers grapple with traffic congestion, fuel costs, and environmental concerns, motorcycles offer a practical and sustainable alternative for daily commuting.

Moreover, Honda plans to enhance regional production strength and deliver high-quality, affordable, and attractive products to consumers. This long-term vision positions Türkiye not just as a manufacturing site but as a pivotal market in Honda’s global strategy.

Türkiye’s Motorcycle Industry in Numbers

According to the Motorcycle Industry Association (MOTED), Türkiye witnessed a total of 1,206,587 motorcycle sales in 2024, marking a milestone year for the sector. Despite a slower start to 2025 due to additional taxation policies, the market has shown resilience. In just the first five months of 2025, sales reached 320,599 units, with nearly 94,000 motorcycles sold in May alone.

However, these figures also reflect a 31% decline in traffic-registered motorcycles compared to the same period last year. The decrease highlights the immediate impact of newly imposed taxes, yet it also underscores the urgent need for localized production to maintain competitive pricing.

Government Incentives and Local Production Surge

The Turkish government’s recent tax regulations have significantly incentivized local manufacturing over imports. As a result, several global motorcycle brands have begun considering or initiating production within Türkiye. Taiwanese brand Kymco, for instance, has already begun local operations. Honda Türkiye’s move to establish a production base in İzmir signals a growing trend among international manufacturers to capitalize on Türkiye’s favorable investment conditions and robust market demand.

These developments represent a broader industrial evolution, where Türkiye emerges as not just a consumer market, but a strategic manufacturing base for two-wheeled vehicles. This shift is expected to have ripple effects across supply chains, parts manufacturing, logistics, and regional exports.

Why İzmir?

İzmir, a major industrial and logistics hub on Türkiye’s western coast, offers multiple advantages for large-scale manufacturing projects. Its proximity to ports, access to qualified labor, and favorable infrastructure make it an ideal location for Honda Türkiye’s latest endeavor.

The choice of Aliağa in particular suggests Honda’s interest in efficient distribution, export capabilities, and a streamlined supply chain. As one of Türkiye’s fastest-growing industrial regions, Aliağa’s development aligns perfectly with Honda’s sustainability and expansion goals.

Global Perspective on Honda’s Motorcycle Strategy

Globally, Honda is among the top motorcycle manufacturers, with a diversified product portfolio that caters to multiple regions and segments. The Türkiye investment not only supports domestic growth but also forms part of Honda’s broader regional strategy to decentralize production and reduce dependence on any single market.

By integrating Türkiye into its global manufacturing ecosystem, Honda enhances its ability to respond flexibly to market changes while tapping into new customer bases across Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

While the investment is a positive development, it comes amid a complex backdrop of economic volatility, regulatory shifts, and global competition. Honda Türkiye will need to navigate fluctuating raw material costs, evolving customer expectations, and the complexities of establishing a new production line from the ground up.

Yet, the opportunities far outweigh the challenges. With a growing domestic market, increased consumer interest in two-wheeled mobility, and supportive government policies, the timing for this investment appears optimal.

A New Chapter for Honda Türkiye

Honda Türkiye’s new motorcycle plant marks a critical juncture in the company’s evolution within the country. From assembling popular car models like the Civic and City to now spearheading the growth of two-wheeler production, the company is poised to play a central role in shaping Türkiye’s future of mobility.

The İzmir facility embodies not just a return to local manufacturing but a renewed commitment to innovation, sustainability, and customer-centric growth. As construction progresses and operations begin, all eyes will be on how this move transforms both Honda’s trajectory and the broader motorcycle industry in Türkiye.
