Beşiktaş has exited the UEFA Europa League following consecutive defeats to Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, losing the first leg 4–2 and the return leg 2–0. The Turkish giants, once a proud name in European football, failed to deliver the performance expected of them on such a significant stage. The result not only led to disappointment among fans but also sparked harsh criticism from one of the club’s most iconic former players, Nihat Kahveci.

Speaking on the Kontraspor YouTube channel, Kahveci offered a brutally honest assessment of Beşiktaş’s performance, claiming the team showed no desire, cohesion, or tactical awareness in either leg of the tie.

A Harsh Reality for Turkish Football

Beşiktaş’s exit from the Europa League marks another setback for Turkish football on the European stage. Despite a storied history in continental competitions, recent seasons have seen Türkiye’s biggest clubs struggling to make an impact. The elimination of Beşiktaş at such an early stage has reignited discussions around strategy, coaching quality, and player performance.

Nihat Kahveci’s Analysis: Frustration Boiling Over

Nihat Kahveci, a revered former striker who made his name both in Türkiye and Spain, did not hold back. His words reflect the growing frustration not only within the fan base but also among former players who still hold the club close to their hearts.

“I was furious after the first match,” Kahveci said. “But now, after this second game, I actually feel grateful for the first one. That says everything. Not once did I feel a spark of excitement in this game. Even the ball seemed to rebel when Beşiktaş had possession.”

His comment about the ball “rebelling” was symbolic of how disconnected the team appeared. According to Kahveci, the lack of coordination, energy, and tactical intent was painfully obvious throughout both legs.

Substitutions Failed to Make a Difference

Kahveci went on to criticize Beşiktaş’s coaching decisions, pointing out how substitutions failed to inject any energy or change into the game.

“Semih comes in—nothing. Club legend Tayfur Bingöl comes in—still nothing. Whoever came onto the pitch had no impact,” he explained. “And then the coach tries to justify his earlier decisions. He’s saying, ‘You criticized Jurasek, now I’ll play Emir at left-back.’ He’s trying to prove a point instead of fixing the problem.”

Kahveci’s comments suggested that some of the decisions made by the coaching staff were more reactive than strategic, and that the players looked like they had forgotten how to play football altogether.

Tactical Chaos and No Offensive Threat

In terms of tactics, Beşiktaş looked completely lost, according to Kahveci.

“Felix passed the ball into the stands when there was no pressure,” he said. “That’s not a mistake, that’s a breakdown in fundamentals.”

Perhaps the most painful aspect of his commentary was the assertion that Beşiktaş did not create a single clear goal-scoring opportunity in the entire second leg, despite Shakhtar posing little threat for much of the game.

“Mert barely had anything to do in goal, and still we couldn’t create even one dangerous chance. That’s the most painful truth,” said Kahveci.

Kahveci’s Broader Concerns: From Players to Leadership

The criticism extended beyond the players to the overall football philosophy and long-term direction of the club. Kahveci referenced Arda Turan as an example of a former player transitioning successfully into coaching. Turan, after building experience at Eyüpspor, has now taken on a European challenge with Shakhtar, earning praise for his tactical maturity and communication style.

“Look at Arda Turan. He took the hard path. He failed at first, kept working, got his team to the Süper Lig, and now he’s managing in Europe. That’s a coach with a vision,” said Kahveci.

By contrast, Kahveci implied that Beşiktaş lacked both a footballing vision and the leadership needed to carry the club forward.

UEFA Conference League Now Awaits

With their Europa League campaign over, Beşiktaş will now shift their focus to the UEFA Conference League, a third-tier European competition introduced in recent years. While the tournament is not as prestigious, it still offers a path to redemption—and perhaps, rebuilding.

However, based on current performances, fans and pundits alike remain skeptical of Beşiktaş’s ability to compete seriously in the Conference League. Kahveci even warned that the team may struggle against lower-ranked clubs like Saint Patrick’s, an Irish club they are set to face next.

“If this team travels to Ireland and struggles with cramps from the flight, they won’t survive the match,” he warned. “Each new game is making us grateful for the previous one. That’s how low things have gotten.”

A Warning Sign for Turkish Football

Beşiktaş’s recent European exit is emblematic of a broader decline among Turkish clubs in international competitions. Structural issues—such as short-term planning, inconsistent coaching appointments, and overreliance on aging stars—have plagued Turkish football for years.

While investment in infrastructure and youth development has improved in recent seasons, top-tier clubs like Beşiktaş, Galatasaray, and Fenerbahçe still struggle to implement cohesive long-term strategies that produce consistent results in Europe.

What Needs to Change?

The Beşiktaş defeat raises several key questions for the club’s management and technical team:

  • Is there a long-term tactical plan in place?

  • Are player acquisitions guided by system needs or market popularity?

  • Is the coaching staff capable of developing talent and fostering teamwork?

Without answers to these questions, the club risks further decline, not just in Europe but also domestically.

Supporters Losing Patience

Beşiktaş has one of the most passionate fan bases in Türkiye, and their patience is wearing thin. Social media has been flooded with criticism, not just aimed at players, but at club executives and coaching staff. Many are calling for structural changes, from the boardroom down to the training pitch.

While clubs go through difficult spells, Beşiktaş supporters demand more than just effort—they want results, clarity of vision, and a team that respects the badge.

The Path Forward: From Crisis to Opportunity

Although the defeat was a hard pill to swallow, it can also serve as a wake-up call. Beşiktaş still has a chance to salvage the season by putting together a respectable run in the UEFA Conference League. But that requires immediate introspection and bold decisions.

Coaching strategy, squad discipline, and a commitment to teamwork must all be revisited. The passion of Beşiktaş fans deserves more than aimless football and disjointed performances.

As Kahveci concluded, “If this is the level we’re playing at, it’s not just a defeat—it’s a collapse.”
