On the serene slopes of Topuklu Plateau in Beyağaç, a breathtaking event recently unfolded that lit up the eyes and imaginations of young stargazers. Organized under the umbrella of the Denizli Metropolitan Municipality, the Denizli Science Center brought together children and teenagers for a deep dive into the wonders of the cosmos during the annual Sandras Sky Observation Events.

This initiative not only offered a scenic getaway from urban life but also opened a window to the universe for participants aged 5 to 17. These hands-on scientific workshops, designed and facilitated by educators and astronomers from the Denizli Science Center, provided an unforgettable gateway to the mysteries of space.

Exploring the Cosmos with Curiosity and Awe

The children and teenagers who joined the event were greeted with clear night skies, powerful telescopes, and an atmosphere full of curiosity. Through guided telescope sessions, many observed celestial bodies such as the Milky Way, Saturn’s rings, and distant star clusters for the first time in their lives. The reactions were nothing short of magical.

Observing the stars from the remote and naturally dark Topuklu Plateau allowed for an exceptionally clear view of the cosmos, making it a perfect setting for an introduction to astronomy. Families accompanied their children, turning the event into a shared learning journey under the stars.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

One of the highlights of the gathering was a dynamic and accessible presentation titled “What is the Accelerated Expansion of the Universe” which captivated the young audience. The session delved into key topics in cosmology, such as the Big Bang theory, dark matter, and the ever-expanding nature of the universe. The speaker, a seasoned science communicator affiliated with the Denizli Science Center, used interactive models and storytelling techniques to make complex concepts relatable to younger audiences.

The interactive nature of the session encouraged questions and inspired awe. From asking what makes a black hole to debating whether other life forms could exist, the young attendees were brimming with questions that science is still seeking to answer. This thirst for knowledge is exactly what the program aimed to cultivate.

Hands-On Workshops for Future Innovators

The daytime workshops provided a full spectrum of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities. Participants built simple rockets, created planetary models, explored magnetic fields, and even experimented with solar panels. Each activity was designed to highlight core scientific principles through engaging and playful methods.

Younger children engaged in space-themed storytelling and art, while older participants attended sessions on coding with Arduino kits, robotics, and designing simple telescopes. The balance between fun and learning created an environment that not only educated but also empowered.

A Platform for Empowering Youth in Türkiye

By targeting children and teenagers across different age groups, the Sandras Sky Observation Events aim to ignite a passion for science early in life. In Türkiye, access to specialized science events outside urban centers remains limited. That’s why this initiative, taking place in the heart of nature, stands out as an example of how public institutions can bridge the educational gap.

According to the organizers, one of the main goals was to reach children who may not have access to telescopes or structured science workshops in their regular schooling environment. By removing physical and financial barriers, the Denizli Science Center effectively democratizes science education and makes it more inclusive.

Science Education and the Role of Nature

Holding the events in the natural environment of Sandras Mountain has a deeper meaning. The combination of scientific learning with environmental awareness fosters a holistic educational approach. Surrounded by forests and clean air, children not only learn about galaxies and stars but also develop a deeper appreciation for Earth and the importance of preserving its natural beauty.

Educators involved in the event emphasized the psychological and cognitive benefits of learning in nature. Outdoor science education has been linked with increased concentration, enhanced creativity, and reduced stress. At Sandras, this synergy between learning and environment was clearly visible.

Voices of Young Dreamers

Many children expressed dreams of becoming astronauts, scientists, or engineers after the event. One 12-year-old participant said she had never seen the stars so clearly before and now wanted to learn more about black holes. Another boy, aged 15, shared how building a simple telescope helped him understand the basics of optics, which he found more exciting than anything he had learned in school.

Parents and guardians were equally enthusiastic. They appreciated how the event was more than entertainment — it was an opportunity for meaningful interaction, curiosity-driven education, and family bonding.

The Role of Local Governments and Institutions

This initiative reflects the growing importance that local governments in Türkiye are placing on science communication and public engagement. The Denizli Metropolitan Municipality’s continued support for the Science Center ensures that such educational events are not one-time spectacles but part of a broader strategy to promote lifelong learning.

In a time when science literacy is more crucial than ever — from climate change to artificial intelligence — equipping younger generations with critical thinking skills and curiosity is a national imperative. The Sandras Sky Observation Events represent a step in the right direction.

Looking Toward the Stars and the Future

The success of the event points to a promising future. Organizers are already planning to expand the program by adding more advanced workshops and inviting international astronomers. Plans are also underway to integrate virtual reality components and create an online platform for continuous learning.

With Türkiye’s growing investment in space exploration and technology, including the recent launch of national satellite programs and participation in international space missions, inspiring young talent in astronomy and science becomes all the more vital.

The stars above Sandras may be light-years away, but for the children and teenagers who gathered under them, they now feel a little closer — not just through the lens of a telescope, but in their dreams and aspirations.
