At the 17th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF 2025) held at the Istanbul Expo Center, a significant milestone in Türkiye’s defense diplomacy was achieved. Baykar, Türkiye’s leading defense technology company, signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Korean Air, South Korea’s flagship carrier and defense integrator.

The agreement, signed during a high-profile ceremony at the fair, was finalized by Baykar CEO Haluk Bayraktar and Korean Air CEO Kh Lee, signaling a new era of collaborative innovation in unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and aerospace technologies.

A Global Stage for Türkiye’s Defense Diplomacy

IDEF 2025, hosted under the auspices of the Turkish Ministry of National Defense and organized by the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation (TSKGV) with the support of the Presidency of Defense Industries, has grown into one of the world’s leading defense exhibitions. Anadolu Agency served as the official Global Communication Partner for this year’s event, which attracted global defense stakeholders, state delegations, and military experts from over 100 countries.

Held at the Istanbul Expo Center (İFM), the fair showcased Türkiye’s increasing capabilities in advanced defense manufacturing, military systems integration, and global defense partnerships.

A Strategic Match in UAV Innovation

The partnership between Baykar and Korean Air underscores a shared vision for next-generation unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) development. While the specific terms of the agreement remain under wraps, defense industry insiders speculate that the collaboration will focus on:

  • Advanced AI-based drone systems

  • Combat UAV platforms

  • Joint R&D for autonomous navigation technologies

  • Co-production agreements for select airframes or payload systems

Baykar is internationally renowned for its Bayraktar TB2 and Akıncı UAVs, which have been exported to dozens of countries and have played a pivotal role in modern combat scenarios. Korean Air, on the other hand, brings its extensive experience in aeronautics, logistics, and military systems integration, making this cooperation a well-balanced synergy of expertise.

Türkiye’s Expanding Role in the Global Defense Arena

The Baykar–Korean Air deal is more than just a business transaction—it reflects Türkiye’s strategic shift from arms importer to technology exporter and defense innovator. Over the past decade, Türkiye has significantly invested in developing indigenous platforms across all domains: land, air, sea, and cyberspace.

Baykar, in particular, has emerged as a global powerhouse in UAV technologies, contributing to Türkiye’s soft and hard power projection in regions such as the Middle East, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe. By aligning with a technological heavyweight like Korean Air, Türkiye is reinforcing its ambition to co-lead the future of smart warfare and AI-integrated defense platforms.

Why Korean Air? The Strategic Rationale

While Korean Air is traditionally associated with civil aviation, it also maintains a Defense Division that engages in logistics support, aerial refueling, and development of UAV platforms for the Republic of Korea Armed Forces. The company is also involved in South Korea’s broader strategy of military modernization and regional deterrence in East Asia.

Partnering with Baykar allows Korean Air to:

  • Tap into Türkiye’s field-tested UAV combat experience

  • Co-develop systems suited for diverse environments

  • Expand its presence in European and Middle Eastern defense markets

For Türkiye, the partnership is equally valuable in terms of technology exchange, industrial cooperation, and geopolitical alignment with an East Asian democratic and technological ally.

More Than Just Equipment Displays

IDEF 2025 was not limited to static displays of tanks, missiles, and drones. It served as a strategic dialogue platform, enabling bilateral agreements, knowledge sharing, and strategic vision-building. Key highlights included:

  • Over 1,200 exhibitors from 55 countries

  • Participation from more than 150 military delegations

  • Live demonstrations of UAV swarming, AI-based targeting, and autonomous ground systems

  • Defense forums focusing on cybersecurity, joint operations, and space defense

The Baykar–Korean Air deal stood out as one of the fair’s most strategically impactful moments, combining Türkiye’s proven UAV excellence with South Korea’s advanced avionics and aerospace infrastructure.

A Win for Türkiye’s Tech Diplomacy

Anadolu Agency, as the fair’s Global Communication Partner, provided real-time coverage of the agreement and its implications. Turkish defense commentators hailed the move as a step toward global co-leadership in unmanned systems, while international analysts noted the growing assertiveness of Türkiye in forming non-Western, but strategic alliances in defense.

Social media buzz also reflected national pride, with hashtags like #BaykarKoreanAir, #IDEF2025, and #TürkiyeDefensePower trending on Turkish platforms.

Joint Projects and Export Opportunities

While immediate production or platform rollout timelines remain undisclosed, the agreement is expected to yield visible outcomes by 2026. Speculation suggests that a joint UAV prototype could be revealed at the next IDEF or Korea’s equivalent defense expo.

Furthermore, the deal opens up third-country export potential for co-developed products, allowing both Türkiye and South Korea to leverage their regional diplomatic ties and market access.

Türkiye-South Korea Defense Ties Enter a New Chapter

The signing of the Baykar–Korean Air cooperation agreement at IDEF 2025 marks a defining moment in Türkiye’s journey toward becoming a defense technology exporter and strategic collaborator on the global stage. It also signals the emergence of a Türkiye–South Korea defense axis rooted in innovation, strategic balance, and mutual technological advancement.

As both nations navigate complex regional and global security dynamics, this partnership could serve as a model for future defense diplomacy—where cutting-edge tech and shared values converge.
