The Turkish National Women’s Volleyball Team continued its dominant run at the 2025 World Championship in Thailand, securing a straight-sets victory over Slovenia in the round of 16. Playing at the Huamark Sports Arena in Bangkok, the reigning European champions showcased resilience and power, booking their place in the quarterfinals where they will face the United States.

A Hard-Fought First Set

The opening set was closely contested, with both teams trading points early on to reach 5-5. Slovenia briefly pulled ahead 10-7 after strong blocks, but Türkiye responded with a 4-0 scoring run to regain the lead at 11-10. The Turkish side extended the gap to 17-14, but Slovenia fought back to level at 22-22 and even held a set point at 25-24. However, clutch plays from Melissa Vargas and captain Eda Erdem helped Türkiye save two set points and eventually close the set 30-28.

Türkiye Dominates the Second Set

Riding the momentum, Türkiye started the second set with authority, storming to a 5-1 lead. With precise passing, powerful spikes, and smart blocks, the lead grew to 14-7. Vargas, Erdem, and İlkin Aydın delivered crucial points, extending the advantage to 20-11. Slovenia struggled to keep pace as Türkiye closed out the set 25-13, putting themselves firmly in control of the match.

Slovenia’s Response Falls Short in the Third

Determined to stay alive, Slovenia began the third set strongly, edging ahead 6-3. Yet, the defensive brilliance of libero Gizem Örge kept Türkiye in rallies, while Vargas, Hande Baladın, and Zehra Güneş turned defense into attack. Türkiye drew level at 13-13 and then surged to a 16-13 lead. Slovenia mounted one last push, tying the score at 24-24. But the Turkish side, with fewer errors and stronger finishing, sealed the set 29-27 and the match 3-0.

Quarterfinal Clash Against the USA

With this win, Türkiye advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will meet the United States on Thursday, September 4. The matchup is expected to be one of the most intense encounters of the tournament, as both teams are among the favorites for the world title.

Melissa Vargas Shines Again

Once more, Türkiye’s naturalized Cuban star Melissa Vargas led the way with 20 points, earning recognition as the match’s top scorer. Captain Eda Erdem Dündar added 17 points, proving her leadership both on and off the court. For Slovenia, Sillah and Zatkovic each contributed 15 points but could not prevent their team’s exit.

Türkiye’s Unbeaten and Untouchable Run

With the win, Türkiye maintained its remarkable record of not dropping a single set in the tournament so far. In the group stage, they swept Spain, Bulgaria, and Canada with 3-0 victories. For the first time since their World Championship debut in 2006, Türkiye finished the group phase unbeaten, breaking a long-standing streak of mixed results.

This run underlines the transformation of Turkish women’s volleyball into a powerhouse of the sport, combining star power, team chemistry, and mental resilience.

Editorial Note

Türkiye’s clean sweep of Slovenia not only secured a quarterfinal berth but also sent a strong message to rivals that the team is aiming for the championship. With Vargas firing on all cylinders and a well-balanced roster supporting her, Türkiye heads into the clash with the USA as one of the tournament’s most dangerous teams.
