The Return of Suzanne Collins
Almost two decades ago, Suzanne Collins introduced readers to the gripping world of ‘The Hunger Games’, a dystopian narrative centered around a young woman forced into a deadly competition against other youths for public amusement.
This novel became a phenomenon, leading to the creation of two sequels — ‘Catching Fire’ and ‘Mockingjay’ — which followed the journey of Katniss Everdeen. The series also expanded with a prequel, ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’, focusing on the backstory of the series’s antagonist, President Coriolanus Snow.
Now, Collins returns with a fresh prequel, ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’, which explores the life and experiences of Haymitch Abernathy, Katniss’s mentor. This new installment is set to hit the shelves on March 18.
Understanding the World of Panem
In case the vast universe of ‘The Hunger Games’ has become a blur, here’s a refresher: Panem is a fictionalized, future version of the United States. It consists of 12 districts, each responsible for providing different resources to the Capitol, the seat of wealth and power.
As Katniss describes in the original book, “In school, they tell us the Capitol was built in a place once called the Rockies. District 12 was in a region known as Appalachia.”
Life in the districts is harsh, with District 12 being the poorest, plagued by starvation and fatal mining accidents. In stark contrast, Capitol residents indulge in excesses, consuming so much that they sometimes resort to emetics to continue feasting.
These citizens are recognizable by their flamboyant fashion sense and are served by avoxes, individuals who have been enslaved and silenced as punishment for treason.
