The Resurgence of Formula 1 in Melbourne

For the better part of the last three decades, the Formula 1 season has traditionally commenced in Victoria, Australia, specifically in the vibrant city of Melbourne. However, the Covid-19 pandemic prompted a temporary shift, relocating the season’s opening race to Bahrain. Now, Melbourne has reclaimed its iconic position as the inaugural race destination.

Oscar Piastri, a talented McLaren driver and proud Australian, expressed his enthusiasm in a group interview last month, stating, “Growing up as a kid, that’s how I remember Melbourne. I’m very excited to have it back as round one.”

This year’s event at the 3.28-mile Albert Park circuit will mark its 28th Formula 1 race since it first hosted the Australian Grand Prix in 1996. Before Melbourne, the race was held in the South Australian city of Adelaide.

Stefano Domenicali, the chief executive of Formula 1, highlighted the significance of the event, stating, “The race has always been a favorite for the fans, drivers, and the teams. Melbourne is an incredible and vibrant international city that is a perfect match for our sport. We are very excited by the future in Australia as our sport continues to grow.”

Legendary driver Michael Schumacher holds the record for the most victories at this Grand Prix, with four wins. His former team, Ferrari, shares the highest number of wins, with a total of 11, a record also held by McLaren. This year, McLaren will feature one of Australia’s two participating drivers, Jack Doohan of Alpine being the other. Doohan, embarking on just his second Formula 1 race, is the son of Mick Doohan, a five-time motorcycle MotoGP world champion.

Although Melbourne has hosted the Formula 1 season opener 22 times, it ceded its position to Bahrain in 2006 due to a scheduling conflict with the Commonwealth Games, which were also held in Melbourne that year. Again in 2010, the city lost the opening slot to Bahrain as the sport aimed to cater to European television audiences by aligning the race start time with early morning broadcasts.
