Torrential Rain Floods Ankara’s Streets
Ankara, the capital of Turkey, experienced intense rainfall on a recent evening that led to severe flooding in multiple neighborhoods. Streets and underpasses were submerged as stormwater quickly accumulated, bringing daily life to a near halt in certain parts of the city.
The heavy downpour began during rush hour, worsening traffic conditions and creating hazardous situations for drivers. Cars became stranded, and deep puddles formed in low-lying areas, making it nearly impossible for commuters to proceed safely.

Ankara Roads Transformed into Waterways
The unrelenting rainfall caused chaos across the city. Many of Ankara’s main avenues turned into shallow rivers, disrupting both public and private transportation. Local media captured striking images of vehicles half-submerged in water, with drivers attempting to maneuver through flooded passages.
In one notable incident, the retaining wall of a residential building collapsed due to soil saturation, damaging a nearby parked vehicle. This incident underscored the fragility of urban infrastructure under the strain of extreme weather.

Governor Vasip Şahin’s Statement
Speaking to the press, Ankara Governor Vasip Şahin attempted to reassure residents, stating:
“There is no major crisis at the moment. We do have water accumulation in one or two underpasses, but emergency teams are actively responding. Hopefully, we’ll get through this without facing a serious situation.”
His statement came as city crews worked around the clock to drain the flooded zones and stabilize affected areas. However, growing concerns remain about the frequency of such incidents and the city’s capacity to handle them in the future.
