A remarkable encounter took place on the shores of Kuşadası’s Güzelçamlı neighborhood when a group of friends, during a nighttime walk, stumbled upon dozens of newly hatched caretta caretta sea turtles struggling to find their way to the sea. The event not only sparked an impromptu rescue mission but also highlighted the growing efforts in Türkiye to protect these endangered marine creatures from urban and tourism-related threats.

A Nighttime Discovery with Life-Saving Consequences

Mehmet Kaya and his friends were walking along Kocagöl beach when they noticed dozens of baby sea turtles scattered across an area of nearly 100 square meters. Instead of moving toward the sea, the hatchlings were disoriented by artificial lights from nearby tourist establishments and began heading inland.

Realizing the danger the hatchlings were in, Kaya promptly contacted the Aegean Nature and Environment Association (EKODOSD), a regional NGO specializing in environmental protection and wildlife conservation. The group is known for its dedicated work in safeguarding sea turtle habitats along Türkiye’s western coastline.

Immediate Response from Conservation Experts

Upon receiving the call, EKODOSD President Bahattin Sürücü provided Kaya and his group with critical guidance on how to handle the situation without causing further stress or harm to the turtles. Following the instructions, the group carefully collected the hatchlings from the pathway, avoiding direct contact with sensitive body parts and refraining from using flashlights or other sources of light.

The turtles were then released closer to the waterline, where they instinctively crawled toward the sound and reflection of the sea, successfully reaching their natural habitat. Thanks to the swift response of locals and expert support from EKODOSD, the tiny turtles avoided being lost to urban hazards or predators.

The Challenge of Artificial Lighting on Nesting Beaches

This event underlines a recurring problem across coastal tourist zones—light pollution. Newborn sea turtles rely on natural light cues from the horizon to find their way to the ocean. Artificial lighting from hotels, restaurants, and street lamps can confuse them, leading to fatal misdirection.

Bahattin Sürücü emphasized the need for more awareness and preventive measures in areas near known nesting zones. “The situation at Kocagöl was unexpected, as we weren’t aware of that nest beforehand. Had the beach lighting not interfered, the hatchlings might have reached the sea unaided,” he noted.

More Nests Than Expected in 2024

Sürücü shared further insights into the current nesting season, revealing that six caretta caretta nests have been discovered in the Kuşadası region so far. The latest nest at Kocagöl was only identified the morning after the rescue, following a field investigation.

“We found that 45 hatchlings had successfully reached the sea. However, 32 eggs were unviable,” he reported. These figures illustrate both the fragility and resilience of these creatures in the face of environmental pressures.

EKODOSD also received encouraging news from nearby Söke, where another female loggerhead turtle had come ashore to lay eggs at the Sahil Sitesi beach. Volunteers have since fenced off the nest area to protect it from human activity and natural predators. Hatchlings from this site are expected to emerge by mid-September, provided the conditions remain favorable.

Community Involvement and Volunteer Action

The latest developments reflect a growing sense of community responsibility toward sea turtle conservation. Local residents, nature lovers, and volunteers are playing an increasingly vital role in monitoring beaches, reporting sightings, and ensuring nests are protected.

Sürücü praised the efforts of ordinary citizens like Mehmet Kaya and his friends, whose awareness and quick thinking made a real difference. “These turtles have survived for millions of years, but today they need our help to continue existing. Every nest, every hatchling counts,” he said.

To facilitate this, EKODOSD has been conducting awareness campaigns in Kuşadası and nearby towns, encouraging tourists and locals to minimize their impact on nesting sites. Educational materials, signage, and community patrols are part of a broader plan to establish long-term sustainable coexistence between tourism and marine biodiversity.

Balancing Tourism with Conservation

Kuşadası is one of Türkiye’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. While this tourism brings economic benefits, it also poses serious risks to wildlife, particularly in sensitive ecosystems like coastal dunes and beaches.

The caretta caretta sea turtle, listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), depends on undisturbed beaches for nesting. Coastal development, sand compaction, artificial lighting, and human interference can all drastically reduce their survival rates.

EKODOSD has called for stricter regulations on beach lighting, seasonal restrictions on certain zones during nesting months, and collaborative efforts with local municipalities and tourism operators. By implementing such measures, Türkiye can position itself as a leader in responsible ecotourism.

Looking to the Future with Cautious Optimism

While much work remains to be done, the recent successes in Kuşadası offer hope. Each successful nesting and hatchling rescue is a step toward stabilizing sea turtle populations in the Aegean. Conservationists are also calling on the public to report sightings and refrain from disturbing nests, no matter how tempting a close-up photo might be.

Efforts are being made to train volunteers in nest identification, hatchling guidance, and data collection. These initiatives not only protect turtles but also foster environmental awareness among younger generations.

The night walk that turned into a rescue mission has become a symbol of how everyday people can contribute meaningfully to conservation. It is a reminder that protecting Türkiye’s natural heritage is a shared responsibility—one that involves respect, vigilance, and swift action.

With more nests expected throughout the season, Kuşadası and its neighboring regions will remain under close watch by volunteers and organizations committed to ensuring that each hatchling has a fair chance at life in the sea.
