After a temporary suspension of operations due to large-scale reconstruction and modernization efforts, Hatay Airport in southern Türkiye is set to reopen for passenger flights on September 1. The announcement was made by Hatay Governor Mustafa Masatlı, who detailed the significant infrastructure upgrades carried out under the leadership of Türkiye’s central government following the devastating February 2023 earthquakes.

“Despite the scale of destruction, limited operations continued with great effort,” he noted during a press conference held at the airport. “Now, we’re entering a new phase—one of restoration and capacity-building.”
A Mega Infrastructure Project Underway
The repairs and enhancements at Hatay Airport are part of the PAT Runway Repair and Development Project, a comprehensive infrastructure initiative launched under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. Governor Masatlı described it as a mega project, encompassing:
Renewal of the existing runway
Construction of a new auxiliary runway (2,720 meters long, 45 meters wide)
Installation of new parallel taxiways
Construction of a modern apron
Landscaping and perimeter security upgrades
Development of new infrastructure facilities such as the regulator building and heating plant

Scheduled Flights Set to More Than Double
The first phase of construction concluded with key structural components ready for operation. As a result, Hatay Airport will resume flights on September 1, with enhanced capacity and operational flexibility.
Among the most notable changes is the increase in weekly scheduled flights from 21 to 49. Flights will include expanded services to Istanbul, Sabiha Gökçen, and Ankara Esenboğa Airports.
In addition, for the first time since the earthquake, international flights will resume, with a new scheduled route to Ercan International Airport in Northern Cyprus.
“This is more than just resuming flights—it’s about reconnecting Hatay to Türkiye and to the world,” Governor Masatlı said.
