The United States is once again weighing stronger measures against Moscow as Russia intensifies its bombardments on Ukraine. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed in an interview with Fox News that the Biden administration is reviewing additional sanctions in response to Russia’s escalated attacks, stressing that “all options are on the table.”

Washington’s Warning to Moscow

According to Bessent, Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to defy the commitments he expressed during high-level talks with American and European leaders. Instead of de-escalating, Bessent noted, Moscow has “shamefully increased its bombing campaign” against Ukrainian cities.

When asked about the specifics of Washington’s potential response, Bessent emphasized the administration’s readiness to act swiftly alongside President Donald Trump, saying the sanctions package is under close review this week.

Trump’s Two-Week Window for Diplomacy

Following his summit with Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska, President Trump announced that he expected to know within two weeks whether real progress could be made toward ending the Russia-Ukraine war. He also hinted that if no meaningful steps were taken by Moscow, Washington would consider imposing “big sanctions or big tariffs or possibly both.”

The Alaska summit was closely watched worldwide, with analysts pointing out that it marked a critical test for Trump’s foreign policy strategy and his approach to Russia. While the meeting left many questions unanswered, it clearly opened the door for harsher punitive measures should Russia refuse to change course.

Rubio’s Perspective on the Diplomatic Fallout

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed similar concerns after the Alaska talks, suggesting that while Trump retained the authority to impose new sanctions, doing so would effectively signal the end of ongoing negotiations with Moscow. Rubio stressed that further escalation would risk closing the diplomatic window entirely, leaving both Washington and its European allies with limited options beyond economic or military deterrence.

Europe’s Role in the Conflict

As the situation intensifies, European nations have also begun signaling their readiness to provide stronger support for Kyiv. Reports indicate that some EU countries are preparing to send additional troops to Ukraine, a move that recently received approval from Washington. Such a step highlights the growing coordination between the United States and Europe in countering Moscow’s aggression, even if it risks further antagonizing the Kremlin.

The Stakes for Global Security

The possibility of new US sanctions comes at a time when the Russia-Ukraine war has entered a particularly destructive phase. Intensified Russian airstrikes have continued to target civilian infrastructure, drawing international condemnation. For Washington, the challenge is balancing pressure on Moscow with keeping diplomatic channels open long enough to explore peace prospects.

Analysts argue that sanctions have been one of the most effective tools against Russia, cutting off financial networks, restricting access to global markets, and limiting technological imports crucial to Moscow’s military machine. However, Russia has also attempted to adapt by strengthening ties with non-Western partners, complicating the impact of Western sanctions.

Looking Ahead

The coming weeks may prove decisive. If Putin fails to show signs of compromise within Trump’s two-week window, the United States and its allies are likely to introduce another round of sanctions. Whether these will succeed in changing Moscow’s calculus remains uncertain, but the message from Washington is clear—continued escalation will not go unanswered.

As Bessent concluded in his remarks, “all options remain on the table,” signaling that the US is prepared for a tougher stance if diplomacy fails.
