In the aftermath of the intense 12-day conflict with Israel last June, Iran has moved swiftly to reinforce its air defense capabilities. The government in Tehran allocated additional resources to the military budget to repair damaged systems and modernize its arsenal, signaling a broader strategy of deterrence and resilience.

On Tuesday, members of Iran’s Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy met with Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi and his deputies. Discussions centered on the current state of the armed forces, lessons from the recent conflict, and the next steps for strengthening national defense.

Committee member Fada Hossein Maleki confirmed that a significant supplementary budget has been approved to restore damaged defense systems. He also revealed that talks with China and Russia over the purchase of new air defense systems are underway, with outcomes expected soon. In addition, Iran has begun taking steps toward acquiring modern fighter jets to bolster its aerial capabilities.

Damage and Lessons From the June Conflict

During the June clashes, Iran relied heavily on its layered air defense network, but Israeli airstrikes inflicted severe damage, particularly on systems located in Tehran and across the western and northern regions of the country. Analysts say the conflict exposed vulnerabilities in Iran’s defenses, highlighting the effectiveness of Israeli intelligence and precision strikes.

Despite these setbacks, Iranian officials insist the military has emerged stronger. Newly appointed joint commander Major General Ali Abdollahi told Tasnim News Agency that the armed forces are now “more capable than before” and accused Israel of waging psychological operations aimed at destabilizing Iranian society.

IRGC Signals Readiness for Future Confrontations

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also weighed in on the possibility of renewed hostilities. Spokesman Brigadier General Mohammad Naini said that while a fresh war with Israel appears unlikely in the near term, Tehran remains fully prepared to respond if provoked. According to him, Israel aims to keep Iran under constant pressure, but any escalation would be met with firm retaliation.

Iran’s Air Defense Architecture

Iran’s air defense network is built on a combination of Russian, Chinese, and domestically developed systems. Key elements include:

  • S-300PMU2 batteries supplied by Russia

  • Bavar-373, Iran’s indigenous long-range air defense system

  • Khordad and Sayyad series of missile launchers

  • Arman systems and upgraded S-200 Ghareh platforms

This hybrid structure is designed to cover multiple ranges and altitudes, though its effectiveness was tested during the June conflict. Officials in Tehran hope that pending agreements with foreign suppliers will reinforce this foundation. Reports in July suggested Iran had purchased a military package from China, though Beijing denied the claim.

The Role of China and Russia

China and Russia remain central to Iran’s modernization strategy. Any deals involving advanced air defense or fighter aircraft could significantly boost Tehran’s deterrence capacity. However, both Moscow and Beijing maintain strategic ties with Israel, leaving questions over how far they are willing to support Iran militarily.

Experts note that Iran’s outreach to these powers is as much about diversifying supply chains as it is about gaining new technology. By broadening its defense partnerships, Tehran aims to reduce reliance on a single source and shield itself from international sanctions or embargoes.

Domestic Messaging and Strategic Posturing

Beyond material upgrades, Iran’s leadership is also focused on the psychological and political dimensions of its military buildup. Public statements stressing readiness and resilience are intended to rally domestic support, particularly after recent leadership losses within the armed forces.

International observers, however, argue that Israel’s ability to exploit weaknesses during the June conflict underscores the gap between Iran’s ambitions and its actual defensive capabilities. While Tehran projects strength, its military still faces challenges in withstanding high-intensity modern warfare.

Preparing for What Comes Next

Iran’s renewed investment in defense reflects both internal pressures and external threats. For the government, reinforcing its military infrastructure is not only about deterring Israel but also about demonstrating sovereignty and maintaining stability in the face of regional rivalries.

Whether forthcoming purchases from Russia or China materialize remains uncertain, but Iran’s intent to repair, upgrade, and expand its air defense network is clear. The June clashes served as a wake-up call, exposing vulnerabilities while pushing Tehran to accelerate its pursuit of military resilience.

Editor’s Note

Iran’s rapid military moves highlight the fragile balance in the Middle East. While Tehran insists it is strengthening its defenses, the interplay of regional politics, foreign partnerships, and domestic messaging creates an unpredictable environment. The coming months will reveal whether these efforts translate into real deterrence or remain largely symbolic.
