The Black Sea region of Türkiye continues to reveal new natural wonders, attracting both domestic and international travelers. Among the most captivating destinations in recent years are the turquoise-colored Göksu travertines and the enchanting Mavigöl, both located in the Dereli district of Giresun. These attractions, often compared to world-famous natural landmarks, are becoming essential stops for those exploring the region’s rich landscapes.

A New Destination Reshaping Giresun’s Tourism

The Göksu travertines, reminiscent of Pamukkale’s terraces, stand out as one of Giresun’s newest tourism highlights. Located in Pınarlar village, the project was initiated by the Giresun Governorship Provincial Administration in 2020. By 2022, the site was opened to visitors, offering a striking terrace formation of small and large pools. Since March 28 of this year, more than 220,000 visitors have toured the travertines, a testament to their rising popularity.

The site has quickly become a major contributor to local tourism, boosting both small businesses and regional visibility. Tour operators are increasingly adding Göksu travertines to their itineraries, while social media platforms are filled with stunning photographs of the white terraces against turquoise waters.

Mavigöl’s Turquoise Magic

Nearby, the famous Mavigöl within Kuzalan Nature Park captivates visitors each summer with its dazzling turquoise waters. This natural color transformation is caused by limestone formations and the soda-rich waters of Göksu Stream. From June onwards, the lake turns a brilliant shade of turquoise, creating an irresistible attraction for photographers and nature lovers alike.

According to officials from the Giresun Branch of the Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks (DKMP), Mavigöl drew 58,000 visitors in the first seven months of the year. This figure reflects the growing recognition of the site not only as a local picnic spot but also as a national tourism destination.

Visitors Share Their Experiences

Tourists who arrive at these natural wonders often express surprise at the scenery that surpasses their expectations.

  • Dilek Kocatürk from Samsun said she had seen images online before visiting: “When you look at the pictures, you think it cannot be this beautiful. But when you arrive, it is something completely different. The clarity of the water and the view are just stunning. I recommend it to everyone.”

  • Mürvet Uçak, who joined a tour group, drew comparisons to Denizli’s Pamukkale, which she knew from personal experience: “I didn’t expect it to be this amazing. It really does resemble Pamukkale. The cool water here is refreshing, especially during the summer heat.”

  • Yaşar Haras from Adıyaman, who visited Mavigöl with his family, described the Black Sea region as breathtaking: “Mavigöl is one of the paradise corners of our country. The travertines are also incredible. Türkiye has so many treasures, and this is one of them.”

  • Fatma Donbay from Samsun said the lake exceeded her expectations: “It feels like a highland breeze during these hot days. It’s my first time seeing it, and I am amazed.”

These personal accounts underline how Göksu and Mavigöl are not just geographical formations but experiences that leave lasting impressions on visitors.

Economic and Cultural Impact on the Region

The rapid rise in visitor numbers has important implications for the local economy. Small businesses in Dereli and surrounding villages benefit from increased tourism, including cafes, restaurants, and guesthouses. Artisans are also finding new opportunities to sell traditional crafts to the influx of visitors.

Beyond economics, these sites are enhancing cultural connections. Families from across Türkiye are traveling to Giresun, blending tourism with cultural exchange. Visitors often combine trips to the travertines and Mavigöl with nearby highland villages, sampling local cuisine and learning about the region’s traditions.

Comparison to Pamukkale and Unique Features

While comparisons to Pamukkale are inevitable, the Göksu travertines offer a more intimate and less commercialized experience. Unlike Pamukkale’s globally famous terraces, Göksu is still in a developing phase, making it a fresher discovery for many travelers. The smaller scale of its pools creates a different aesthetic, one that emphasizes tranquility and immersion in nature rather than mass tourism.

Mavigöl adds a distinct element to the area, with its turquoise hues making it a seasonal highlight. Together, these attractions position Giresun as an emerging alternative to Türkiye’s more established tourist destinations.

Looking Ahead

Local authorities plan to continue improving accessibility and facilities while preserving the natural beauty of the sites. Sustainable tourism practices are being discussed to ensure that the growing popularity does not harm the fragile ecosystems.

As word spreads and visitor numbers rise, Göksu travertines and Mavigöl are likely to play an even larger role in shaping Giresun’s tourism profile. For travelers seeking destinations that combine natural wonder with authenticity, these sites represent an unforgettable experience.

Editor’s Note: Natural wonders like Göksu travertines and Mavigöl highlight Türkiye’s unmatched beauty. While their growing popularity boosts local tourism, preserving their authenticity will be key to ensuring they remain treasures for future generations.
