With its commanding highland landscapes and centuries-old fortifications, Gümüşhane is a city where history is built into the hills. Spread across the city center and the districts of Torul, Kürtün, and Köse, 16 registered castles bear the marks of the Roman, Seljuk, and Ottoman eras, offering history enthusiasts a rare opportunity to see traces of multiple civilizations in a single region.

Architectural Gems with a Story to Tell
Among the city’s most prominent fortresses are Canca Castle in the historic Süleymaniye neighborhood, as well as Keçikaya and Kov Castles, each remarkable for their architecture and commanding views.
Professor Sevim Beyza Sarıkaya, Dean of the Tourism Faculty at Gümüşhane University, describes these fortifications as “windows into history, beyond mere stone walls.” She emphasizes that visiting a castle should be more than just observing its structure:
“When visitors explore these sites with a knowledgeable guide and listen to the stories behind them, they connect more deeply with the past. It becomes a journey through time.”
Where History Meets Nature
The castles are not only architectural marvels but also scenic vantage points. Perched on steep cliffs and rocky outcrops, they offer sweeping panoramic views of surrounding valleys and mountains. Sarıkaya notes that this combination makes them valuable destinations for both cultural and nature tourism.
Many castles in Türkiye, including those in Gümüşhane, have undergone restoration projects and now serve as museums, cultural event spaces, and open-air venues. Such initiatives preserve their historical integrity while giving them a new role in contemporary tourism.
Strategic Fortresses of the Silk Road
Lecturer Serhan Doğan from the Department of Atatürk’s Principles and History of Turkish Revolution points out that Gümüşhane’s castles were strategically constructed to safeguard important trade routes, including parts of the Silk Road.
Built in hard-to-reach locations, these structures were designed to deter enemy advances while overseeing vital passages. The fortresses’ construction techniques and materials reflect the architectural styles and military engineering of the various empires that ruled the region.

A Living Connection to the Past
Exploring Gümüşhane’s castles offers more than a history lesson. It is a chance to walk paths once tread by traders, soldiers, and settlers, to see the same sweeping landscapes that once guided caravans, and to experience the resilience of structures that have stood against centuries of weather and conflict.
For travelers seeking both historical depth and natural beauty, these fortresses stand as enduring symbols of the region’s strategic importance and cultural richness — a blend of heritage, architecture, and breathtaking scenery that continues to inspire awe.
