After a temporary suspension of operations due to large-scale reconstruction and modernization efforts, Hatay Airport in southern Türkiye is set to reopen for passenger flights on September 1. The announcement was made by Hatay Governor Mustafa Masatlı, who detailed the significant infrastructure upgrades carried out under the leadership of Türkiye’s central government following the devastating February 2023 earthquakes.
This marks a critical milestone in the region’s recovery and positions Hatay Airport to serve as a modern and resilient transportation hub for both domestic and international passengers.

Earthquake Damage and the Path to Recovery
The dual earthquakes that struck on February 6, 2023, with epicenters in Kahramanmaraş, caused severe structural damage across multiple provinces, including Hatay. Governor Masatlı emphasized that the airport sustained substantial damage, yet continued to operate under difficult circumstances thanks to the dedication and coordination of emergency teams.
“Despite the scale of destruction, limited operations continued with great effort,” he noted during a press conference held at the airport. “Now, we’re entering a new phase—one of restoration and capacity-building.”
A Mega Infrastructure Project Underway
The repairs and enhancements at Hatay Airport are part of the PAT Runway Repair and Development Project, a comprehensive infrastructure initiative launched under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. Governor Masatlı described it as a mega project, encompassing:
Renewal of the existing runway
Construction of a new auxiliary runway (2,720 meters long, 45 meters wide)
Installation of new parallel taxiways
Construction of a modern apron
Landscaping and perimeter security upgrades
Development of new infrastructure facilities such as the regulator building and heating plant
This holistic approach is designed not only to restore, but also to future-proof the airport, preparing it for increased traffic and broader connectivity.
Scheduled Flights Set to More Than Double
The first phase of construction concluded with key structural components ready for operation. As a result, Hatay Airport will resume flights on September 1, with enhanced capacity and operational flexibility.
Among the most notable changes is the increase in weekly scheduled flights from 21 to 49. Flights will include expanded services to Istanbul, Sabiha Gökçen, and Ankara Esenboğa Airports.
In addition, for the first time since the earthquake, international flights will resume, with a new scheduled route to Ercan International Airport in Northern Cyprus.
“This is more than just resuming flights—it’s about reconnecting Hatay to Türkiye and to the world,” Governor Masatlı said.
Long-Term Plans and Continued Development
The reopening of the airport marks just the beginning of a multi-stage development plan. The next phases will include:
Main runway construction
High-speed exit taxiways
New connection taxiways
Construction of a perimeter road and security walls
Additional supporting infrastructure
Masatlı noted that these ongoing efforts aim to elevate Hatay Airport’s service standards to match international benchmarks, ultimately benefiting residents, visitors, and the region’s economy.
“We are building a facility worthy of the people of Hatay,” he said. “Our long-term vision is to make Hatay a globally recognized city, and this airport is a symbol of that ambition.”

A Broader Vision for Regional Development
The reopening of Hatay Airport is part of a broader push to revitalize the province in the aftermath of one of the worst natural disasters in Türkiye’s history. Since assuming office, Governor Masatlı has made it clear that his administration is working tirelessly to fulfill its promise of rebuilding Hatay stronger, safer, and more connected than before.
Thanks to support from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the national government, several large-scale recovery and development projects have already been launched across the region. The reconstruction of the airport stands as a key pillar of this broader effort, aimed at restoring economic vitality, mobility, and investor confidence.
Masatlı emphasized that infrastructure improvements like these are strategic investments, not just in transportation, but in tourism, commerce, and regional integration.
Economic and Strategic Implications
With enhanced flight capacity and international connectivity, Hatay Airport is expected to have a positive ripple effect on the local economy. Improved logistics will boost sectors such as:
Tourism: Easier access for domestic and foreign travelers
Trade and Logistics: Faster movement of goods and services
Construction and Real Estate: Increased investor interest due to improved accessibility
Employment: Job creation across airport operations and ancillary services
As flight frequencies increase, businesses across Hatay and the surrounding provinces will benefit from a revitalized transport ecosystem.
Symbol of Resilience and Progress
For many in Hatay, the reopening of the airport is not merely a technical achievement—it’s a symbol of recovery, resilience, and hope.
“We are not just fixing what was broken,” said Masatlı. “We are building something better, something that reflects the strength and spirit of the people of Hatay.”
The return of scheduled flights, especially to international destinations, sends a clear message: Hatay is once again open for business, ready to welcome visitors, and eager to reclaim its place on the global map.
As September 1 approaches, the local community looks forward to seeing planes in the sky once again—a powerful sign that Hatay’s journey from disaster to rebirth is well underway.
