A Timeless Tradition
On Monday, New York City will be awash with green as the melodious strains of bagpipes fill the air during the prestigious 264th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This event, organized entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers, first graced the streets in 1762, earning its title as the world’s oldest St. Patrick’s Day parade.
It also holds the distinction of being the largest, drawing approximately 150,000 participants and close to two million onlookers each year.
The parade is set to commence promptly at 11 a.m. at the junction of Fifth Avenue and East 44th Street, proceeding northward. ‘We are anticipating a fantastic turnout this year,’ expressed Hilary Beirne, the parade’s chief administrator. ‘There’s a palpable excitement in the air.’
Where to Watch the Parade
The parade will be broadcast live on NBC 4 New York, offering additional streaming options on platforms such as Roku, YouTube, Samsung TV Plus, Xumo, PlayCozi, and the websites of both the parade and NBC 4. The coverage will be helmed by Gus Rosendale, co-anchor of NBC 4’s ‘Weekend Today in New York,’ alongside Rana Novini, the station’s weekend newscast anchor.
Treasa Goodwin-Smyth, known for hosting the ‘Ireland Calls Radio Show,’ and Tommy Smyth, a renowned soccer announcer for ESPN, will also contribute to the broadcast.
The Parade Route
The parade will follow its traditional route, moving north along Fifth Avenue from East 44th Street to East 79th Street. It’s important to note that no portable restrooms will be available along the path.
For those seeking the optimal viewing experience, it’s wise to arrive by 10:15 a.m. Prime viewing locations include 59th Street and areas near Rockefeller Center, as advised by Mr. Beirne.
Who Will Participate?
The parade will feature an array of participants, including state and local dignitaries such as Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams. The New York Police Department’s marching band and its Emerald Society, which celebrates Irish American heritage, will also join the procession.
A variety of high school and college bands, like the Xaverian Pipe and Drum Corps and the New York University Pipes and Drums Band, will add to the musical festivities.
Additionally, a pipe band from the Emerald Society of the Port Authority Police Department and representatives from Aer Lingus, Ireland’s national airline, will march. A comprehensive list of participants is available for those interested.
