Türkiye’s automobile market is undergoing a rapid transformation in 2025, with electric and hybrid vehicles capturing nearly 45% of total car sales between January and July, according to the latest data from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD) reported by BloombergHT.

The total passenger car sales rose by 6.7% year-on-year, reaching 572,198 units, while light commercial vehicle sales increased by 5.8% to 143,497 units in the same seven-month period.

Electric Vehicles Gain Momentum, Traditional Fuels Lose Ground

The shift in fuel preferences is becoming more pronounced:

  • Fully electric cars recorded a total of 102,160 sales, marking a significant rise. When including range-extended EVs (vehicles with electric motors supported by internal combustion generators), the figure climbs to 103,310.

  • Hybrid vehicles also showed strong demand with 153,363 units sold.

  • In contrast, gasoline vehicles, although still leading in numbers, fell sharply to 266,095 units, down from a 65.1% share to 46.5%.

  • Diesel car sales continued to decline with just 45,678 units sold, shrinking their share from 10.9% to 8%.

  • Autogas vehicles remained a niche segment with 3,752 units sold, holding steady at 0.7% market share.

Market Share Highlights

  • Fully Electric Cars (BEVs): 17.9% market share (up from 7.7% in 2024)

  • Hybrid Cars: 26.8% market share (up from 14.9%)

  • Combined Electrified Vehicles (BEV + Hybrid): 44.9% of the total market

  • This means nearly 1 in every 2 new cars sold in Türkiye now features electric propulsion in some form.

Plug-In Hybrid Explosion

A remarkable surge was seen in the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) category:

  • 30,013 units sold from January to July

  • 5.2% market share

  • Year-on-year growth of 1,499%

This indicates a growing consumer appetite for vehicles that blend electric driving with fuel-based range security.

July Sales Set New Records

The trend continued into July, with record-breaking sales:

  • 17,225 fully electric cars sold – translating into a 20.5% monthly market share

  • 21,656 hybrid cars sold25.7% market share for the month

Combined, nearly half of all cars sold in July were electric or hybrid, setting a new benchmark in Türkiye’s green mobility transition.

What’s Driving the Surge?

Several factors contribute to this electric boom:

  • Government incentives and tax breaks on electric vehicles

  • Increasing consumer environmental awareness

  • Rising fuel prices and maintenance costs of traditional engines

  • Greater EV model variety and availability from both domestic and global manufacturers

Additionally, domestic electric vehicle manufacturers like Togg have played a critical role in pushing the public toward sustainable mobility choices.

Türkiye’s Path to Electrification

With global trends favoring decarbonization and local momentum accelerating, Türkiye’s auto market is well on its way to an electric future. Analysts predict that by the end of 2025, electric and hybrid vehicles could surpass 50% of total passenger car sales if the current trajectory holds.

This transformation not only reflects changing consumer preferences but also signals a paradigm shift in Türkiye’s automotive ecosystem, as infrastructure, policy, and public sentiment continue aligning toward sustainability.
