In a landmark event held in Yavuzlu village of Kilis near the Syrian border, Türkiye officially launched the Türkiye-Syria Natural Gas Pipeline. The high-profile opening ceremony was attended by Türkiye’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, Syrian Energy Minister Muhammed El-Beşir, Azerbaijan’s Economy Minister Mikayıl Cabbarov, and Chairman of the Qatar Development Fund Fahad Hamad Al-Sulaiti.
With this new cross-border energy corridor now operational, natural gas from Azerbaijan has started flowing into Syria through Turkish territory.
A Symbol of Rebuilding Ties and Infrastructure
“This is a historic moment,” said Minister Bayraktar during the ceremony. “Today, in our city of brotherhood, Kilis, we are witnessing the inauguration of a vital energy lifeline between Türkiye and Syria. This project symbolizes our strengthened ties with our Syrian brothers and sisters who have endured immense hardship over the years.”
Minister Bayraktar expressed gratitude to Syria, Azerbaijan, and Qatar for their collaboration on this international project, hoping the pipeline would bring prosperity to all parties and contribute to peace in the region.
Syria’s Energy Rehabilitation Gains Momentum
Minister Bayraktar underlined Türkiye’s commitment to aiding Syria’s reconstruction and stability. As part of that effort, Türkiye has sent technical delegations to Damascus to evaluate and support the development of energy infrastructure. Since 2017, Türkiye has been supplying electricity to northern regions such as Afrin and Idlib.
“We are currently exporting electricity to Syria from eight different connection points,” Bayraktar noted. “With planned expansions, we aim to increase our export capacity by 25 percent initially and eventually more than double it, ultimately meeting the electricity needs of 1.6 million Syrian households.”
Two Billion Cubic Meters of Gas, Five Million Homes Empowered
The minister added that in the first phase, Türkiye aims to export up to 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually to Syria. This volume would power electricity generation facilities with a combined capacity of 1,200 megawatts—enough to meet the electricity needs of five million Syrian homes.
Geopolitical and Humanitarian Dimensions
The pipeline launch also ties into broader humanitarian and geopolitical strategies. According to Bayraktar, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has instructed ministries to implement initiatives that will restore normal life in Syria and support the voluntary, safe return of displaced Syrians.
By stabilizing energy supplies and enabling infrastructure restoration, Türkiye aims to play a key role in reshaping post-conflict Syria. The Türkiye-Syria gas pipeline stands as a milestone in regional cooperation, energy diplomacy, and humanitarian rebuilding.
