Nestled in the heart of southwestern Türkiye, Salda Lake is more than just a picturesque natural wonder—it’s a scientific marvel, ecological treasure, and photographer’s dream. With its striking turquoise waters, white mineral-rich shores, and rare geological features, Salda has drawn not only tourists but also global researchers, including those from NASA.

This ancient lake, located in Yeşilova district of Burdur province, has become the subject of international fascination due to its similarities to Mars’s Jezero Crater—a location currently being studied by the Perseverance rover.

What Makes Salda Lake So Unique?

At first glance, Salda’s beauty lies in its surreal appearance: magnesium-rich white sands, crystal-clear waters, and a surrounding landscape that shifts in tone and texture with every season. But beneath this visual spectacle lies an extraordinary scientific story.

According to Professor Briony Horgan from Purdue University, who is also part of NASA’s Mars mission team, Salda’s geochemical structure and sedimentary formations resemble those of the Jezero Crater, an ancient lakebed on Mars. Horgan visited Salda in 2019 and described it as:

“An incredibly unique place on Earth.”

The region’s rock and soil composition is of particular interest because it contains magnesite and hydromagnesite minerals, which are believed to exist on Mars and could provide clues to the planet’s ancient water history.

Microbial Marvels Preserving Ancient Secrets

Beyond its mineralogical features, Salda Lake is home to microbial stromatolites—layered carbonate structures formed by microorganisms, which are thought to be among the earliest forms of life on Earth. These formations may be over 2 million years old and could offer a living glimpse into the conditions that fostered life 3.5 billion years ago.

Professor Nurgül Balcı from Istanbul Technical University emphasizes that studying Salda helps researchers understand both Martian geology and early Earth biology. In her interview with CNN Travel, she noted:

“Salda offers many clues that may help us understand how life on Earth began.”

A Natural Wonder Under Threat

Despite its growing global reputation, Salda Lake is at risk. Falling water levels, pollution, and human activity are threatening its delicate ecosystem. In fact, the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) recently included Salda among the Top 100 Geological Heritage Sites in the World.

However, experts warn that despite conservation labels, implementation remains weak. Erol Kesici, an advisor to Türkiye’s Nature Conservation Society, raised alarm over uncontrolled construction, littering, and overtourism, stating:

“Human pressure and waste are putting the lake’s fragile balance at risk.”

Without effective policies, what should be a preserved global heritage site could suffer irreversible damage.

A Paradise for Nature and Photography Enthusiasts

While scientists study the ancient life traces hidden in Salda’s shorelines, nature lovers and photographers flock here to capture its ethereal beauty. The area is home to:

  • 301 plant species

  • 3 endemic fish species

  • Over 30 species of waterfowl

Whether you’re seeking solitude, landscapes, or biodiversity, Salda delivers a four-season visual and ecological experience.

Planning Your Trip to Salda Lake

Location: Yeşilova, Burdur Province, Türkiye

Best for: Geotourism, photography, birdwatching, walking trails

How to Get There:

  • From Antalya: Approx. 2.5 hours by car

  • From Denizli: Approx. 1.5 hours

  • Best Option: Private vehicle, which allows you to explore the surrounding natural attractions freely

  • Alternatives: Several guided day tours are offered from nearby cities, especially during summer months

While there is no direct train or plane access to the lake, road infrastructure is well-developed, making the journey pleasant and scenic.

A Glimpse Into Another Planet—On Earth

Salda Lake is not just another travel destination. It’s a rare convergence point where natural beauty, planetary science, and ecological heritage meet. Whether you’re exploring the white shores for leisure or peering into stromatolites through a microscope, Salda inspires awe and reflection.

This ancient lake may resemble Mars, but it belongs very much to Earth—and to all of us. Preserving it requires recognizing its value not only as a travel destination but as a scientific archive and symbol of planetary connection.
