Türkiye continues to strengthen its transportation network with ambitious infrastructure projects, and Trabzon is now one of the prime beneficiaries of this development surge. In a recent meeting held at the Trabzon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu emphasized the importance of strategic investments in the region, highlighting that approximately 175 billion Turkish liras have already been allocated to enhance Trabzon’s transportation infrastructure.

From highway tunnels to airport expansions and rail transit, Trabzon is undergoing a significant transformation aimed at improving accessibility, economic integration, and regional mobility.

Güney Çevre Yolu Expected to Ease Urban Congestion

One of the most pivotal initiatives currently underway is the construction of the Güney Çevre Yolu (Southern Ring Road), a massive undertaking designed to relieve traffic in the city and offer a modern transportation corridor connecting key districts. The project begins in the Mersin district and extends toward Sera Lake and Akyazı, ultimately integrating with the existing Kanuni Boulevard.

The initial phase of the project covers 16.5 kilometers of the total 54.3-kilometer route. Notably, 14.5 kilometers of this segment consist of tunnels—a significant engineering challenge that reflects the topographical constraints of the region. The remaining 2 kilometers include viaducts and access roads, indicating a comprehensive approach to connecting mountainous areas with the coast.

As the expropriation process continues in parallel with construction, this infrastructure will play a key role in improving road safety and reducing travel time for both local commuters and tourists. By bypassing the city center, the ring road is expected to alleviate congestion, especially during the busy summer months.

Transforming Air Travel with a New Airport Over the Sea

Trabzon’s position as a major regional hub is not limited to its highways. The city’s airport, one of Türkiye’s ten busiest, has also been earmarked for significant upgrades. According to Minister Uraloğlu, the existing terminal has been operating beyond its designed capacity, with daily flights ranging between 140 and 160. At times, it ranks as the seventh busiest airport in the country.

In response to growing demand, the Ministry of Transport has concluded planning work on a long-term airport expansion program. Among the most ambitious aspects is the design of a completely new airport located north of the existing one, extending into the Black Sea. Once realized, this would become the third airport in Türkiye constructed over the sea, following similar projects in Ordu-Giresun and Rize-Artvin.

The project includes additional facilities such as a new international terminal, a CIP terminal, and auxiliary service buildings to accommodate both domestic and international travelers. Although the tender process is not imminent, inclusion in the national investment program represents a milestone toward realizing the vision.

Strategic Significance of the Maritime Airport Project

Constructing an airport over the sea presents a host of advantages. First, it enables the city to preserve valuable land resources while minimizing environmental impact inland. Second, it reduces noise pollution in densely populated neighborhoods. Third, it enhances weather resilience for takeoff and landing, thanks to the stability of open-sea runways.

This long-term plan also positions Trabzon as a key player in Türkiye’s aviation map, supporting increased tourism, trade, and business activity across the Eastern Black Sea corridor. With rising interest from Gulf countries and Central Asia, a state-of-the-art airport will further cement the region’s importance.

Rail Transit to Connect Coastal Districts

While road and air investments take center stage, the rail network is also about to expand. The Ministry is nearing completion of the planning phase for a new 32-kilometer light rail system that will link Akçaabat and Yomra, two populous coastal districts within the Trabzon metropolitan area.

This rail line aims to enhance urban mobility, reduce dependence on cars, and foster a more sustainable public transport system. It is also expected to become an integral part of Trabzon’s future smart city initiatives, especially as local governments strive to cut emissions and improve urban life quality.

Economic and Social Impact of Integrated Infrastructure

The cumulative impact of these projects is likely to transform Trabzon into a logistics and transportation hub for the entire region. As a gateway between the Caucasus, Central Asia, and western Türkiye, Trabzon’s strategic location makes it ideal for multimodal transportation networks.

Improved highways will facilitate freight movement to inland provinces, while the expanded airport and future rail connections will streamline both business and tourism-related travel. The boost in connectivity is anticipated to accelerate real estate development, job creation, and industrial diversification.

Additionally, the integration of various modes of transport—road, air, and rail—will enable seamless transitions between different logistical platforms, a core principle in modern urban planning.

Preserving Heritage While Building the Future

Despite the heavy focus on infrastructure, the government is also mindful of preserving Trabzon’s unique cultural and natural assets. Tunneling techniques and sea-based construction reduce disruption to historical neighborhoods and minimize deforestation, aligning with global trends in sustainable development.

Minister Uraloğlu’s statements reflect a growing awareness that infrastructure must serve not just economic growth but also environmental sustainability and social cohesion. By incorporating local needs and consulting with regional stakeholders, the projects aim to create long-term value without compromising the city’s heritage.

Looking Ahead

Türkiye’s ongoing investment in the Black Sea region reflects a broader strategy of balancing growth between the western and eastern provinces. By equipping Trabzon with modern transportation systems, the government not only unlocks economic potential but also enhances the quality of life for residents.

The focus on multimodal connectivity—linking sea, air, road, and rail—demonstrates a mature infrastructure policy that aligns with global urbanization and mobility trends. While the full realization of these projects will take time, their inclusion in the national investment program signals that they are no longer distant dreams but actionable goals.

As the groundwork is laid, the region watches with optimism, anticipating a future where Trabzon is not just a cultural jewel of the Black Sea, but also a model of modern urban integration and strategic development.
