Istanbul is accelerating its push to become a leading destination in the global congress and events industry, as revealed in a high-level meeting involving public institutions, tourism professionals, and private sector leaders. The city is setting its sights on increasing its share in the international MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) market by launching a unified strategy focused on coordination, public-private synergy, and international promotion.
With Istanbul Turizm Fuarı (ITF) 2025 just around the corner, the city’s tourism ecosystem is mobilizing to unlock its full potential and attract more high-caliber global congresses.

Four Strategic Pillars to Reinforce Istanbul’s MICE Competitiveness
At the core of the meeting was a commitment to implement coordinated action under four key strategic goals, designed to overcome systemic bottlenecks and position Istanbul as a globally competitive congress hub:
Establishing an integrated communication and infrastructure system that fosters effective coordination between public institutions and private stakeholders.
Encouraging proactive support from public institutions, especially in areas directly related to the congress and event ecosystem.
Resolving incentive-related challenges through stronger institutional collaboration, ensuring smoother access to government-backed support for congress organizers.
Promoting Istanbul-centric messaging across all congress and MICE sector initiatives to build a unified global brand.
These action items are meant to create the backbone of a long-term plan that leverages Istanbul’s logistical advantages, historical charm, and service capacity while tackling administrative fragmentation.
“We Will Turn Potential Into Reality”
Stakeholders in the meeting, ranging from local tourism bodies to international MICE experts, agreed that Istanbul’s potential as a global congress destination remains largely untapped. The urgency to address this gap, particularly after years of pandemic-related disruption, was palpable.
Discussions focused on:
Analyzing the current status of the global congress industry
Benchmarking Istanbul against rival destinations
Exploring public-private cooperation frameworks
Identifying actionable solutions to boost international event traffic
Istanbul’s geographic location, infrastructure capacity, and cultural appeal make it uniquely suited for large-scale international gatherings. However, without systemic cohesion, the city risks falling behind other regional and European competitors.
“We Will Elevate the Istanbul Brand Together”
İTO and ICVB President Şekib Avdagiç emphasized that the roadmap to expanding Istanbul’s MICE footprint must be built on robust public-private collaboration. Speaking at the meeting, Avdagiç shared:
“From our Governor’s Office to our municipality, from industry associations to tourism professionals, this dialogue is proof of our collective commitment to prioritize congress tourism and transform Istanbul’s MICE potential into reality.”
He further added: “I thank all stakeholders for their contributions. Together, we will raise the Istanbul brand to new heights.”
ITF 2025: A Global Showcase for Türkiye’s Tourism Vision
Complementing these efforts is the upcoming Istanbul Tourism Fair (ITF) 2025, scheduled for September 25–26 at the Yenikapı-Eurasia Show and Art Center. More than just a local event, ITF 2025 aims to present Türkiye’s entire tourism offering to the world, with Istanbul as its flagship.
Organizers have confirmed attendance from:
Over 500 international buyers, travel agencies, and tour operators
Tourism professionals from 50 countries
More than 2,500 domestic travel agencies
This gathering is expected to catalyze thousands of B2B meetings, hotel contracts, and cross-border partnerships, offering a tangible boost to the industry.
Volkan Ataman, CEO of Dream Project and a board member of ITF, noted:
“The fair will be a critical venue for hotel and agency contracts. During the Tourism Summit to be held within the fair, we’ll evaluate the 2025 tourism season and outline our targets for 2026.”

“An Investment in Türkiye’s Tourism Future”
TÜROB (Hotel Association of Türkiye) President Müberra Eresin emphasized the strategic importance of ITF, now in its third edition:
“We firmly believe that this fair is a strong investment in the future of Türkiye’s tourism industry.”
According to Eresin, the event will help bridge the gap between global buyers and local tourism stakeholders, while reinforcing Türkiye’s position as a versatile, four-season destination.
Repositioning Istanbul in the Global Congress Market
Global MICE trends show a significant rebound post-COVID, with cities competing intensely to capture high-value international congresses. Cities like Barcelona, Vienna, Singapore, and Dubai have long dominated this space, but Istanbul’s renewed focus could offer serious competition—if strategic barriers are addressed.
Key priorities moving forward include:
Improving visa processes and accessibility for international attendees
Enhancing marketing efforts in priority regions such as Europe, the Middle East, and Asia
Upgrading venue technology and sustainability standards
Providing transparent, streamlined incentives for event organizers
Istanbul’s Competitive Edge in MICE
While challenges remain, Istanbul already boasts several inherent advantages:
A rich cultural and historical backdrop
World-class infrastructure including airports, public transport, and event venues
Competitive pricing for event hosting and accommodation compared to Western Europe
Experience in hosting large-scale international summits and trade fairs
If the city successfully leverages these strengths while implementing the new 4-pillar strategy, Istanbul could reclaim its place among the top global congress destinations by 2026.
