Türkiye is experiencing a sharp surge in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) on its roads, reflecting both global sustainability trends and domestic innovations. According to data compiled from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the number of registered electric cars in the country reached 289,457 by the end of July 2025. This figure represents an extraordinary increase of approximately 120.6 percent compared with July 2024, when the total stood at just over 131,000.

At the same time, the overall number of registered cars in Türkiye reached 16.8 million. While EVs still represent a relatively small fraction of this fleet, their rapid expansion is reshaping the dynamics of the automotive market.

The Growth of Electric Cars

Back in 2015, Türkiye counted only 565 registered electric cars. Within a decade, the figure has grown hundreds of times over, surpassing the 250,000 threshold in June 2025 and quickly climbing past 280,000 by July.

The share of EVs in the national car fleet now stands at 1.7 percent. While this may seem modest, the trajectory indicates an accelerating pace. At the end of 2024, electric cars represented just 1.1 percent of the fleet. Within seven months, the proportion rose significantly, suggesting that the coming years could bring even higher adoption rates.

Driving Factors Behind the Surge

Several factors have fueled this impressive growth:

  • Expansion of charging infrastructure: With more charging stations being installed across the country, range anxiety is less of a concern for drivers considering the switch to electric mobility.

  • Environmental benefits: EVs produce fewer carbon emissions than traditional vehicles, aligning with Türkiye’s broader sustainability and energy-efficiency goals.

  • Domestic innovation with Togg: The entry of Türkiye’s first domestically produced electric car, Togg, into the market has played a pivotal role. Beyond being a source of national pride, Togg has encouraged many drivers to embrace EV technology.

  • Shifting consumer preferences: As awareness about climate change and fuel efficiency grows, consumers are increasingly willing to explore alternatives to traditional combustion-engine cars.

Hybrid Vehicles on the Rise

The transition to sustainable mobility is not limited to fully electric models. Hybrid cars are also gaining ground in Türkiye. Introduced into the registry in 2011 with just 23 vehicles, the numbers have grown exponentially in recent years.

  • By 2019, registered hybrids reached 13,877.

  • At the end of 2023, the total stood at 222,328.

  • By the end of 2024, it had nearly doubled to 391,296.

  • In July 2025, the figure hit 556,995.

This steady growth means hybrids now represent 3.3 percent of the total registered car fleet, up from 2.4 percent at the end of 2024. The numbers suggest that many Turkish consumers see hybrids as a practical stepping stone before fully transitioning to electric vehicles.

A Market at a Turning Point

The pace of adoption indicates that Türkiye’s automotive landscape is undergoing a fundamental transformation. Once viewed as a niche market, electric and hybrid cars are now an integral part of consumer discussions and national transportation planning.

Industry analysts suggest that if the current trajectory continues, the EV share of Türkiye’s car fleet could climb well above 5 percent within just a few years. Coupled with the hybrid boom, sustainable vehicles could soon represent a significant portion of the market.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the remarkable progress, several challenges remain:

  • Charging infrastructure in rural areas: While urban centers are seeing rapid expansion of charging stations, rural and smaller towns still lack sufficient facilities.

  • Cost of ownership: Although EV prices are gradually becoming more competitive, affordability remains a concern for many households.

  • Battery technology and recycling: As the fleet grows, Türkiye will need to invest in sustainable battery production and recycling systems to minimize environmental impact.

Addressing these issues will be key to maintaining momentum and ensuring that the growth of EVs contributes meaningfully to both economic and environmental goals.

Looking Forward

The rise of electric and hybrid vehicles marks a pivotal moment for Türkiye’s automotive industry. With Togg leading the way domestically, and with global manufacturers increasing their EV offerings in the Turkish market, consumers now have more choices than ever before.

The combination of supportive infrastructure, environmental awareness, and innovative products suggests that Türkiye is positioning itself as a serious player in the transition to green mobility. As the country heads into the second half of the decade, the challenge will be not only to sustain the pace of adoption but also to ensure that the supporting ecosystem evolves in tandem.

Editorial Note

Türkiye’s shift toward electric and hybrid vehicles highlights the intersection of technology, policy, and consumer behavior. The figures from TÜİK tell a story of exponential growth, but the real significance lies in the cultural shift. More Turkish drivers are open to embracing a future where cars are not just about speed and status, but also about sustainability and responsibility. The continued success of this transformation will depend on maintaining both affordability and accessibility while fostering national innovation in the sector.
