The recent 5G Local Product Workshop held at Turkcell Plaza marked a significant milestone in Türkiye’s journey toward a more independent, innovative, and resilient telecommunications ecosystem. Organized under the coordination of the Communication Technologies Cluster (HTK) and facilitated by ForInvest, the event brought together representatives from the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), Turkcell’s procurement and business teams, and local suppliers. The workshop aimed not only to highlight the readiness of domestic products for 5G integration but also to solidify a roadmap for collaborative growth.

This strategic gathering was driven by one shared goal: to expand the role of locally developed and manufactured technologies in the country’s critical digital infrastructure. As Türkiye prepares for the nationwide rollout of 5G, this initiative underlines the growing recognition of homegrown innovation as a national asset.

Setting the Stage for a 5G Ecosystem Built in Türkiye

The opening address by Erkan Durdu, Turkcell’s Executive Vice President of Human Resources and Business Support, emphasized the broader purpose of the workshop — to bring together diverse players in the telecom sector and foster deeper collaboration. Stressing the significance of local technology in the context of national security and economic sustainability, Durdu noted that the use of domestic products in 5G infrastructure is not merely an option but a strategic necessity.

Durdu’s statement that “mutual sensitivities must be respected for a healthy ecosystem” reflects an emerging consensus among Türkiye’s industry leaders: the 5G transition must be inclusive, cooperative, and rooted in local capacity.

HTK: Driving Local Innovation with Purpose

HTK Chairman Dr. R. Ruşen Kömürcü reinforced this perspective by sharing key achievements of the cluster. He highlighted that, with around 200 member companies, HTK has played a pivotal role in increasing the share of local investment in telecom infrastructure from just 1 percent to an impressive 45 percent. These efforts were realized in collaboration with the country’s three major mobile network operators.

Kömürcü also pointed to the immense export potential of local R&D efforts within the 5G framework. According to him, future revenues from the commercialization and international sales of HTK-supported technologies could be accounted for under operators’ local investment obligations — an idea that could both incentivize innovation and ensure financial viability for local developers.

A Platform for Concrete Results

Beyond strategic declarations, the workshop yielded practical outcomes. More than 100 B2B meetings were conducted between HTK’s 52 member companies and Turkcell’s procurement teams. These discussions served as a springboard for future collaborations, addressing issues ranging from product compliance and technical integration to network security and scalability.

By creating a dedicated space for suppliers and operators to engage directly, the workshop provided actionable insights into what is needed for domestic technologies to meet Turkcell’s high standards for performance, reliability, and interoperability. This format supports not just product exposure but an ongoing dialogue between developers and buyers — a cornerstone of any sustainable innovation ecosystem.

A Message of Appreciation and Strategic Vision

In his remarks, Durdu commended the local suppliers for their progress in meeting rigorous industry benchmarks. He emphasized that Turkcell’s advanced infrastructure and market leadership position the company to play a defining role in boosting the localization ratio of 5G technologies. With continued collaboration, the integration of domestic products can become both a technological advantage and a national imperative.

The Strategic Role of HTK in Shaping Türkiye’s Digital Independence

HTK Secretary General Orhan Güneri Dürmüş reiterated the cluster’s mission: to serve as the collective voice and representative of Türkiye’s telecommunications sector. He underlined HTK’s role in ensuring that member firms evolve into powerful, visible players through partnerships with key operators.

According to Dürmüş, this workshop serves as a vital tool in achieving those ambitions. He expressed optimism that such gatherings will deepen the spirit of shared responsibility and collaborative progress across the telecom industry. He also thanked Turkcell for hosting the event and for its ongoing support of domestic innovation.

Looking Back to Move Forward: The HTK Legacy

Established in 2017, HTK has been instrumental in building a localized ecosystem for telecommunications. What started as an initiative to meet the needs of 4.5G networks through local resources has evolved into a robust structure capable of leading the 5G transition. HTK’s long-term goal remains clear: to ensure that investments in Türkiye’s digital future are anchored in local ingenuity and executed through national capabilities.

The organization’s proactive approach — from facilitating R&D projects to offering platforms like this recent workshop — showcases a commitment not only to technological advancement but also to economic resilience and global competitiveness.

Paving the Way for 5G Export Potential

One of the most promising aspects discussed during the workshop was the possibility of exporting Turkish-developed 5G technologies. With global demand for secure, efficient, and customizable telecom solutions on the rise, Türkiye’s local tech ecosystem could potentially carve out a niche in international markets.

This vision is aligned with the broader ambitions of Türkiye’s digital transformation strategy, which seeks to make the nation a producer — not merely a consumer — of critical technologies. Through effective coordination, investment incentives, and collaborative platforms like this one, Türkiye is poised to emerge as a formidable player in the global 5G arena.

A Blueprint for the Future

As Türkiye accelerates toward a fully integrated 5G infrastructure, the workshop at Turkcell Plaza will be remembered as more than a routine industry event. It symbolizes a cultural and economic shift — a declaration that Türkiye is ready to stand on its own technological feet, supported by a vibrant network of innovators, engineers, and policy-makers.

The path forward involves not only building faster networks but also cultivating stronger partnerships, ensuring cybersecurity, and promoting sustainable innovation. Events like these offer the blueprint for that future, where Türkiye’s digital backbone is not just built within its borders but also shapes conversations far beyond them.
