The humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the Gaza Strip has taken yet another tragic turn. Over the past 24 hours, three more Palestinians — including two children — have died from starvation, pushing the total number of hunger-related deaths to 162, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.

Dr. Munir al-Bursh, Director General at the Health Ministry, announced the update through his social media account, stating that “hunger continues to silently claim lives in Gaza, but we will never remain silent.” His remarks echo the desperation of a population trapped under siege, deprived of food, water, and humanitarian aid, as the world stands by.

Children Bear the Heaviest Burden

Of the 162 Palestinians who have died from starvation so far, 92 were children. The suffering of the youngest and most vulnerable highlights the scale of the crisis. Images emerging from northern Gaza show emaciated children lying in overcrowded hospital corridors, receiving minimal aid as medical supplies run dangerously low.

Many of these children died not just from a lack of food, but also from complications caused by malnutrition — weakened immune systems, infections, and diseases that could easily have been prevented under normal conditions.

This level of suffering is not due to natural disaster or economic collapse. According to health experts and humanitarian organizations, it is the direct result of a deliberate blockade that has made access to food, clean water, and essential supplies nearly impossible.

A Manufactured Crisis Under Siege

Since October 7, 2023, Gaza has been under relentless bombardment and an all-encompassing blockade imposed by the Israeli military. Borders remain tightly shut. Humanitarian aid convoys are either blocked entirely or delayed for days, leading to the decay of critical supplies before they ever reach those in need.

What makes the crisis especially severe is the combination of Israel’s aerial bombardments and its restrictions on aid. As international agencies attempt to send food, medicine, and hygiene products, access is often denied, delayed, or misrepresented through official statements. “Aid delivery is constantly hindered by false claims and bureaucratic obstruction,” said al-Bursh, voicing the frustration of countless humanitarian workers on the ground.

The Collapse of Gaza’s Infrastructure

The entire Gaza Strip is on the brink of collapse. With over 88 percent of its infrastructure destroyed — including water treatment plants, hospitals, power grids, and bakeries — residents are left without access to the most basic necessities.

Displaced families now reside in overcrowded shelters, schools, or makeshift tents where clean water is scarce, hygiene is nonexistent, and the risk of disease runs high. Public restrooms are often shared by hundreds, and the spread of infectious diseases has become rampant. Medical staff, already overwhelmed and under-equipped, struggle to care for thousands of patients with dwindling supplies.

The Israeli military continues to target these areas through daily airstrikes, further compounding the suffering. Shelters housing displaced families are frequently bombed, turning what little safety remains into new zones of death and injury.

Displacement on an Unimaginable Scale

Of Gaza’s estimated 2.3 million inhabitants, over 2 million have been displaced since the onset of the attacks. Many families have been forced to move multiple times, carrying what little they can, only to be displaced again as bombings and eviction orders continue.

These displaced civilians live in overcrowded schools or under tattered tarpaulins, exposed to harsh weather conditions and deprived of sanitation. Hunger is just one part of their daily struggle. They also face cold, disease, trauma, and the psychological toll of constant insecurity and loss.

Hunger as a Weapon

International human rights groups have long accused Israel of using hunger and thirst as tools of warfare. By controlling the flow of aid and targeting civilian infrastructure, the Israeli blockade has transformed food into a political weapon.

Reports from aid organizations confirm that trucks loaded with food and medicine are regularly denied entry or subjected to delays of over a week. During this time, perishable items spoil and fuel needed to power water pumps or hospital generators runs out. The result is a spiraling cycle of preventable deaths.

This strategy is not only inhumane but also widely considered to be in violation of international humanitarian law, which prohibits collective punishment and the targeting of civilian populations.

Global Indifference and Political Paralysis

Despite the mounting death toll and desperate appeals from both local and international voices, there has been little effective action from the international community. United Nations agencies have repeatedly called for ceasefires and humanitarian corridors, but their pleas have largely gone unanswered.

Dr. al-Bursh’s statement — “The world is still watching, but the gates remain closed” — captures the disillusionment many in Gaza feel toward the global response. While international headlines report the devastation, and world leaders express “deep concern,” very few concrete steps have been taken to halt the suffering or hold those responsible accountable.

Death Tolls That Can No Longer Be Ignored

Since Israel’s bombardment of Gaza began in October 2023, at least 60,332 Palestinians have lost their lives and 147,643 have been injured, according to health ministry statistics. These numbers are not just statistics — they represent families torn apart, communities reduced to rubble, and futures forever erased.

Aid workers, journalists, and civilians have all been among the casualties. In some cases, entire neighborhoods have been flattened, with survivors left to dig through rubble in search of loved ones or salvageable belongings.

A Humanitarian Crisis Beyond Numbers

The devastation in Gaza is not just material — it is moral. It raises profound questions about humanity, justice, and the limits of international compassion. How many more must die from hunger before the global community moves beyond condemnation and into action?

The situation in Gaza represents one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent history. It is a crisis that is not only avoidable but actively constructed. Every life lost to starvation is a death that could have been prevented — a child who could have been saved, a future that could have been spared.

Calls for Urgent International Action

Humanitarian groups continue to demand immediate access to Gaza for food, medical supplies, and emergency aid. They urge world governments to apply pressure for the opening of border crossings and the lifting of restrictions that are strangling life in the region.

Meanwhile, activists and civil society groups across the globe are organizing protests, boycotts, and campaigns to raise awareness and push for accountability. But for now, for the people of Gaza, each hour without food, clean water, or safety brings the risk of more silent deaths — more names added to an already unbearable list.

As the hunger deepens and hope diminishes, the world must ask itself a difficult question — how long can we remain silent while an entire population starves before our eyes?
