Turkey has launched the TCG İçel (F-518), the latest addition to its I-class frigates, at Sefine Shipyard. Fully equipped with domestically produced weapons and systems, the vessel is expected to significantly boost the Turkish Navy’s operational capacity in the “Blue Homeland” maritime doctrine.
The TCG İçel is the eighth I-class frigate built under the country’s MİLGEM program. The project, governed by a contract signed on April 6, 2023, between the Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB), the TAIS Joint Venture, and STM, foresees the simultaneous construction of seven frigates across three shipyards. Sefine Shipyard is responsible for two of them. Before TCG İçel, the Izmir (F-516) and Izmit (F-517) were launched earlier this year.

Designed to operate in all weather conditions and up to sea state five, the frigate will undertake missions including surveillance, reconnaissance, patrol, anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, air defense, electronic warfare, and self-defense against asymmetric threats. Additional roles will include protecting coastal shipping lanes, monitoring terrorist activities, and supporting amphibious operations.
The vessel measures 113 meters in length with a displacement of around 3,200 tons. Powered by a combined gas turbine and diesel engine system, it can reach speeds of over 29 knots and has a range of 5,700 nautical miles at an economical cruising speed of 14 knots. Its onboard supplies allow it to remain at sea for up to 15 days. The frigate also features a flight deck capable of accommodating 10-ton helicopters or unmanned aerial vehicles for day and night operations.
The TCG İçel integrates a range of indigenous defense systems, including the 76mm MKE naval gun, the Gökdeniz close-in weapon system, the MİDLAS vertical launch system, and the Atmaca anti-ship missile. These are supported by advanced sensors and systems such as a 3D air and surface search radar, fire control radar, electro-optical tracking system, electronic warfare suite, and the ADVENT combat management system.
